Interesting to see what the property market implications will be....
Article from the SMH (I borrowed their headline): http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/03/24/1079939695338.html
One significant quote:
Cullen said Canberra and Wellington were also considering a proposal for mutual recognition and "harmonisation" of banking regulation.

Obviously there are investors already crossing the Tasman (both ways I imagine), however I expect that the effects on property markets in either country would be, at best, marginal at the moment.
I accept the comfort level associated with NZ as an international investment location (I think I am right in saying it is closer to Sydney than Perth is and probably less expensive a flight) however the tax treatment of property as an investment does differ between the two countries and there are still forex issues.
(If the forex and tax issues were ever resolved then, IMHO, the mutual effects to property markets would be not-insignificant)
Still, the world continues to get smaller (or so it seems) and NZ and Australia will only get closer.

Commonsense says:
Like EU in Europe, bigger is better and simplier, equals cost savings so a good thing...
but
Like EU in Europe, politics gets in the way so nothing is simple, equals never happens, so a imaginery thing ...

So long as they resolve the issues in the right direction - I like a top tax rate of 39% , no CGT , unlimited deperciation right offs, capitalisation of interest etc etec. On the other hand your 10year fixed IO loans would be quite nice !
