First time I needed to do reno when power was disconnected I paid $50 for it to be turned on for the 4 weeks that i needed it.

However these days they dont disconnect the wires as such, they just flick the switch off and place tape over it. A carpet layer says he often needs a few minutes of power to heat up the iron to join the carpet and does not see this as an issue.

If I get warning, and if I only have one week of work, I negotiate with the tenant- if they leave the power on for one week, I'll deduct $25 from their final rent. That saves me the $50 connect fee.

Hi Gordon

TXU now have a 'temporary supply' facility.

There must be lots of landlords out there just wanting power for a week or two. TXU are responding to market forces!

Just ring them for a quote. It isn't expensive and last time I 'borrowed' a power lead from a neighbour it cost me wine, chocolates and anxiety as their power lead was left dangling over the fence for a couple of days while I frantically got carpet laid and various odd jobs done.

I also tried the old tenants / new tenants thing once, left everybody annoyed as nobody could agree on how much fuel had been used. I gave the tenant $50 to keep them happy. Could have had the power connected for that and kept everybody on my Christmas Card list.

cheers

Cant slip the neighbor $20 and use theirs (extension cord), a lot of meter boxes have a p point in them. I didnt think they disconnected the power anymore but just took a "reading" (thats my experience from my ips)

I used to be a carpet layer and we used to bludge power or use a generator (if we knew before hand). LoL Have nver seen a carpet layer beatin by a no power issue. (50m of extension cords and/or a fast run from 2 houses away with a hot heat iron ;-)

All good Ideas, the power company will usaually sort something out for you, ie deposit etc.

Up here in Qld when the OO or tennant moves out and has the power disconnected, it will stay on for 10 days anyway! So most LL use this time to do any work needed and not have to pay for power.

Yes in QLD, I purchased a house , with a long settlement. The person renting , moved out early, hence the house was vacent for about 2 months. The hot water system was left on , and from my rough calculations , used about $40 of electricty, between the time tennent got final reading and settlement, when I got the power connected in my name.
The electricity company attempted to charge me for the electricity used since tenent moved out, but after I complained, my bill was reduced to a nominal amount.

Yes we did this recently, we called the power company and let them know when we required the power. They stopped billing the tenant on the day we instructed and we got billed for the next week. no connection fees.
