G'day everyone ... just curious if anyone is using any of the IP service providers to make phone calls via ADSL or Cable.

Seems to be quite a lot of choices available

We use Skype quite a lot at work for calls to the US and UK (just to other Skype users).

I haven't compared it to any alternatives though.

Cheers,
GP

All of my outgoing voice calls go via NodePhone (http://internode.on.net/nodephone). Seamless integration with my home phone..

We have a VoIP through engin - domestic phone calls 10c flat rate no time limit all around Australia (this is good if you have properties interstate - saving money when making calls to property managers, agents, accountant, lawyers etc - as well as to relatives living interstate), international calls comparable to prepaid international phone cards (ie much cheaper than Telstra fixed lines - good when hubby is overseas I can phone him in hotels without the hefty Telstra bills and can even do a 3-way conference between him, me and mother-in-law!). We have bigpond broadband cable and bought an engin voice box ($150) - this enables us to make calls to fixed land lines and mobiles. The voice box is connected to a normal phone, then to the internet which is connected to the computer. Engin gives a separate phone number - so it is handy to have another line besides Telstra, and it has all the features of a normal phone line eg voicemail, conference call, call forwarding etc. Call quality varies but generally good. If you just want a "soft engin" phone - not via the engin voice box, I believe the quality is worse. One of the downside is no phone when bigpond is not working - which happens every now and then - so we have not got rid of our Telstra yet. We use engin line to make all outgoing calls and Telstra number to receive all incoming calls.

Great ! I will check out engin.

I use Internode as an ISP however seems like monthly charge is more expensive.

Will call tomorrow with all my q's.
