I am new to Australia and get requests for property investments from family and friends abroad. Do they need prior approval from Foreign Affairs?
What type of property should I be looking for?

Steer them toward www.firb.gov.au - (Foreign Investment Review Board) - it's a very "easy read" site, and should answer most of their questions.

Also consider that many lenders will require a 30 % deposit from non residents.
