Sale price data

Is it possible to get from some government department a recent history of sale prices in a particular area? I know some private companies do sell this information, but I am assuming they get the info from somewhere that is publicly available, and I would prefer to go straight to the source.

Apparently in Western Australia this data can be purchased from the Department of Land Administration. http://www.dola.wa.gov.au
The cost is $22 for up to 100 listings in a particular location going back to about 1986.
