View Full Version : Renovation workshop

hi all
Anyone heard of Financial Success Systems? They were apparently on A Current Affair recently renovating a property that made a quantum capital gains leap.... These guys are running a "renovation workshop" in Brisbane in February (same date as Jan's workshop in sydney), and also again in May.
Am a little interested (might have fallen into the trap of wondering if there's anything new under the sun, having done quite a few reno's...). So just wanted to check if anyone has any direct exposure to them, and if so, what say you about them?

Geoff Doidge used to be a regular contributor in the forum some time ago- there’s a lot of stuff in the archives, and it’s well worth while looking at. His handle was originally just “Geoff”- but I think he got a little upset at me coming along and using “GeoffW”- he became “GeoffD” after that.
A number of people on the forum have been to his workshops.
For me though, I’d love to see Michael Croft doing a seminar
:D

No comment about the seminar/workshop :D
Geoff Doidge aka Geoff1 run workshops with Paul Eslick. They are good value by all accounts. Check out his web site for details.

Hello see change,
Canberra became the centre of the universe on January 22, 1975. Prior to that it was Sydney, and prior to that Noumea, Suva, Adelaide, Melbourne and Port Moresby.
The centre moved from Canberra to Geelong briefly in 1978 and there were other brief shifts to various parts of Asia and the Pacific.
For the record,;earlier this year the centre of the universe moved slightly west of Canberra to rural NSW and is likely to remain there for some time.

Steve Navra might be able to contribute to this thread about the centre of the universe- Steve, where are you when we need you? For myself, I've lived (minimum 12 months) in Sydney, Melbourne, Southampton UK and Washington State USA. I much prefer Canberra. Peak hour means a five minute delay in getting home 20km away. And it's a great place to raise children. Why would anyone commute in Sydney? Or raise children in an evil metropolis?
With all respect to Mr Doidge et al, who, as I understand, did give excellent reno workshops, I wonder if reno workshops in Brisbane (where there's lots of weatherboard) might be applicable to more southern brick constructions. It probably is- I suspect the question has been asked before, and probably answered. But he certainly has good experience. (And yes, he did become Geoff1 from memory). I'd certainly be interested in Geoff1's seminars if they do cater more for southern conditions.
I did receive some great value from Michael's evening seminar. I went to one of the first- I understand that subsequent evenings elsewhere went a lot longer, and people learnt lots. Sorry Michael, to say this- but those evenings were great. Probably not economic to you, but of great value to those of us who were there. Thank you.

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the compliments. I am very busy at the moment and the seminar/workshop ideas are on the agenda for next year as they were so much fun (if uneconomic). They will be exceptional value for money and since Freestyler Events lost interest I will run them myself - more correctly the most effecient senior manager I know will run them, aka my wife/partner.
More info will be posted in the appropriate forum early next year. However I can tell you Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart are on the list. As is New Zealand and the UK.
Re Geoff Doidge; most of the ideas presented are applicable to the southern states with very few exceptions. It does require a little lateral thinking though.
Steve Navra has moved to Sydney for business reasons - Canberra is small potatoes after all.
Regards, Michael Croft
Isn't the world supposed to be a connected place now? Steve, you should've been able to run from south woop-woop.
Micheal, glad to hear you're planning on continuing. Let us know when everything's been sorted out and ready to go :)

perhaps it's a staffing and perception issue. if you wanna rumble with the big boys (and girls) you gotta be in Sydney.

I did the Doidge Eslick seminar a couple of months ago.
My opinion is it was great value (besides the flakey panel of experts he got in). But as far as buying/selling/renos go, just one of his ideas will pay for the seminar cost.
And the 480 page workbook is a great resource (nearly as good as this forum)

Where could I get more info on the Doidge Eslick seminars?
Thanks.

Jerry,
.Where could I get more info on the Doidge Eslick seminars? There's some information in the link on the first post in this thread.
There's also ads in all recent ads of Australian Property Investor magazine- Geoff writes the renovation articles for the magazine

Thank you Geoff, I should've read the first post carefully.
Is there anyone in Melbourne who wants to attend the course in Feb? There is a discount for 3 people booking together - $1207 as opposed to $1497. Please PM me.
Thanks.

Jerry

Michael,
Great to hear that you are planning some seminars for next year.
However hope that you are able to keep them cost effective so that like Steve Navra's course we can all be encouraged to go along for quality information and maybe pay for a couple of friends/relatives or two.
Keep the locations cost effective. No need for the most fancy or inner city venue to get people along.
Cheers,
Sunstone.

Michael,
YAY!
I will be looking forward to it.
I learnt heaps of valuable stuff from the short presentation you did previously. Having done so much in the renovation side for so long, you have heaps to offer.
Roll it on!

Hi Sunstone,
The costs will be kept to a minimum and the value will be in the content not the hype.
The workshops will involve strategies and technique/tactics for adding value (not just renos) and will run for one day but possibly two as there is a truck load of material to cover.

Michael,
Just curious. Why isn't Freestylers interested in working with you anymore? Didn't you make them enough moey, or something? Or was it a mutual break off?

Hi Mark,
In truth I don't know. I last spoke to Robert Forward some months back and he was going to get back to me with a proposal - but I've heard nothing. I have heard that Freestyler Events have a new presenter for renos and I'm told this is TW's brother, but don't know if this is so. Nothing like keeping it the family though if this is the case ;)
Anyway whatever the reason they have made their choice and there is no bad blood as far as I'm concerned.
Regards, Michael Croft
Oh, I’m excited now Michael………can’t wait for your return :D

Hi Michael,
I might be interested in a course of this nature... assuming the costs are reasonable.
I'm assuming the location would be Canberra (I might be in for a bit of a drive...)?

Hi,
Melbourne is definitely on the list if that's a bit closer for you.
Anyway I would like to kill this thread now as anymore talk of workshop/seminars should be done in meeting point. I don't want to have to censure myself for spam !! Or worse still have Sim come down on me like a ton of bricks
Regards, Miichael Croft
But if I attended one of your seminars Michael, I would hope that I would learn those little tricks to make that ton of bricks into another dwelling which I could rent out to increase my returns ! :D

How much of a dwelling would you get for a ton of bricks anyway? Probably not much, I haven't measured such things lately.

Geoff,
Well they're auctioning a toilet block in Gleb this month, and previously a 3mx4m toilet block in East Syd which went for $171k, thats pretty close to a ton of bricks :P

Hi Michael, what ever happened to the manual you started writing before hand, also nice to see you around on the forum a lot more.
Michael Croft
06-12-2002, 07:11 AM
Hi Nicholas,
The manual became bigger than Ben Hur and turned into a post doctoral dissertation on what I have done in IP's for the last 25 years.
It has since been broken down into a pure and simple reno manual and then there is the rest; multiple income streams and their creation, additons and conversions, subdivision, dual occs, house relocation, strata titling, valuations and valuers, quantity surveys and much much more.
This is why it didn't come out this year as I sort of lost the plot for a while.
Anyway no more posts on this pleeeease!!!!!!!!! as all will come out next year.
Thanks, Michael Croft

I think many would be interested in your post doctoral thesis on everything you've learned in 25 years on property investing! :D
