Dear guys,

Practical question. GeoffW and I have been discussing the benefits of whether to post a link to a news article or whether to cut and paste the whole article so that it can be searched in later?

(Sometimes you can't easily find the info that you want without a search and this is not going to get better.)

Also links can die. However would appreciate further feedback on this.

Cheers,

Sunstone.

Sunstone,

This was prompted by my post on http://www.somersoft.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5502

I wasn't sure whether to just post the link (and leave it legal, but probably unread by many) or to paste the text of the artice (and make it searchable, easy to read by many, and in potential breach of copyright).

Thoughts?

Hi Geoff,

IMHO a brief excerpt with all the key words followed by the link will suffice.

Say cheese :p

People are most likely to do this with material from somewhere like AFR, which often is only provided to subscribers - so posting a link is useless to most.

Posting the actual content here here would be a violation of copyright - and quite possibly policed due to charge associated with access to the content.

A summary and a link would be a good idea.

Dear Sim,

Still a tricky question.

Whilst a summary would be nice this would lead to less articles being posted because of the time involved to summarise the article.

Anyway agree that a combination with the link is a good way.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Cheers,

Sunstone.

Sunstone,

I'd be inclined to post the first paragraph of the posted article- it's often a very good summary of the article.

I believe copyright law allows brief quotes of books, films etc- and perhaps even articles.

I would suspect the quoting of a single paragraph, with a pointer to the original, would not cause any legal problems- it would increase the number of hits on the original article (with all its ads).

You can copy one chapter or 10% for 'review' purposes. There's more information here (http://www.copyright.com.au/ )
