What's with the question - retire at 60?
I want to retire at 40!!!!!!!!
How about a survey on realistic expected age of retirement?

My goal is financial independance (1-Jun-2012) with a after tax income around $120K (in 2002 dollars) and the expectation that my ongoing total nett worth and income should well exceed CPI.
There is a quote "You will be the same next year as you are this year except for two things, the people you meet and the books you read.", I would add to this "and thoughts you think and the actions you take".

Q. What is your goal & what do you want from investing ?
1. To earn enough passive income so I am not reliant on a day job (I haven't got an exact $$ figure on this but I could survive on $20k before tax if I had to. I could leave the Rat Race now if I had to but I enjoy my day job, good food & wine, a reliable car, comfortable overseas travel ... too much)
2. To acquire knowledge & skills so I can effectively manage the properties when financially free
3. Gain enough skills from property investing so I can analyse different kinds of investments in terms of financing, return, tax effectiveness and risk
Q. Why do I invest in property ?
1. I can control (to a large extent) the risks
2. It puts money in my pocket
3. It's tangible
4. Because I have had some success
5. It will help me achieve some of my goals
6. Property is generally a passive investment
7. I enjoy analysing property deals

After 24 hours or so it is interesting to note the high percentage of people who are either desiring high wealth or financial independance.
I would constrast this with Jan's books in which I believe her target audience motivation of the books are for those who wish to retire late 50's or 60's with enough cashflow to live a reasonable life. Basically Jan shows a very reasonable mathematically sound process of generating a retirement income over by following some simple rules over a 20 years period.

What is my goal?
Why property investing?
My goal is not to be reliant on a pension or any other person in my life.
I have had the experiance of eating breakfast cereal for breakfast, lunch and tea, or having breakfast cereal just for the one meal of the day as that was all to be had. Have been woken by a strange person in my bedroom listing all the furniture to be sold as my parents were in default!
Having to move from house to house to house all your growing life!!
My goal was to never put my children through what I have had to endure!!!!!
Never to have anyone knock on my door and ask for moner owed!!!!
Why Property?, been married twice my first father inlaw was a property developer for one of the then major REA in the state, he taught me RE, RE, RE!!!!, we are still good friends to this day and is soooooo proud of what I have acheived in the last 15 months, knowing all the setbacks and heartaches that I have had during my life even upto 2yrs ago which nearly devistated my wife and I, but we got back up looked the world in the eye and said give us all you got but we are here to stay!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Like I have stated before MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME

My goal is to enjoy myself & give something back (so others can reach a level of personal enjoyment).
You cannot be financial independent if you rely on investment income of any type. In fact you're reliant on the entire world economy to do what you expect it to!
The only way to be financially independent in truth is to buy an island land and live self-sufficiently (with lots of hard labour & using a minimum of powered technology).
