where to buy "less expensive" reno products in Perth??

I'm hoping that the Perth people out there can guide me to some of the bargain basement suppliers for tiles/ door handles (modern brushed steel), paint, shower screens, window blinds, light fittings, doors, even landscape supplies and plants. In fact, any of the places you frequent to save a bit of cash on any reno gear. Most of the threads I've seen through searching talk of sydney auction houses which are fantastic, but where are all Perths best spots?

From my experience, I've found "the good guys" pretty competitive for electrical housewares, the Mature Plant Nursery for plants, but things like carpets and tiles I always start from scratch each time and then compare until I get one thats the right price. It would save a lot of time to know about warehouses that are always really cheap in the first place. Any advice? I'm in the northern suburbs but will travel :)

Hi, Tizzy

I love Ross's Auction House on Railway Parade in Maylands. A good start would be to get yourself on their emailing list - go to www.rossauction.com.au.

Ross's Hardware is next door, and has been a good source of budget tiles, vanities, etc.

Cheers

For venetian blinds - try the cheap imports at Bunnings/Furniture Bazaar and get them cut independently. There is a lady in Thorline who cuts blinds and you can save quite a bit of cash. Its pretty resource intensive however, and next time I need to put blinds in I will be using a full-service business as it was not worth the time. From memory ABC Blinds in Ossie Park provided me with the most competitive quote.

Flooring - cant go wrong with laminate floors. Parrys sells some nice Kronotex (german-made) stuff for 22-ish a meter, and you can install it yourself without too much drama.

Thats great. Just what I wanted to hear itinerantotter ,thank you :) Hopefully there'll be a few more additions to the list. Funny, we last used Ross's in 1991 for a reno and I'd forgotten about them really. They used to sell end of lines and odds and ends.
Re the venetian blinds. I think there is a small tool you can get to cut them with a rounded end to the slat. But if you find that lady in Thornlies contact number that would be great.

I agree with Ross's also Cape Salvage on Gnangara Road is quiet useful and there are a few other companies in the area (depends on what you are looking for).

Here's a Link to several for you.

Thanks Redwing thats a great list. Its now bookmarked. Cape is quite well organised but I've always found them quite pricey for their wood, but haven't dropped in for a few years. But I guess the days of cheap demolition are well over. Used to be an interesting place that was quite chaotic on the road to Bullsbrook. I think it may have been called Brakovichs salvage? Anyone know if it still exists? Also if you are ever up on Marmion Avenue just before you get to Mindarie, drop in on Tamala Park Recycling. Always worth a squizz. Its a tip where we are all made to sort our rubbish and the best bits go on sale. Great for one offs but takes a bit of browsing to see whats on offer. Very very cheap. Open sundays which is useful. If you are from out of the area, drop in to the tip then pop by Mindarie and take a look at the development there and enjoy lunch on the jetty. Lovely.

If you're doing lots of renos, it's also worth getting yourself a Bunnings trade card.

I regularly vow I'm not going to use them, but when you're in full cry on a reno, they certainly are convenient!;)

Cheers

Would also be interested in what is needed to get a bunnings trade card, ie min spend per month. I hate using them as well but they are so handy.

Do I need an ABN to get a trade card? How do you prove you are a trader?

Don't need an ABN - well, you didn't when I got mine a few years ago. Just give them a spiel about how you're going to spend millions of bucks in their stores doing loads of renos. There is a minimum spend, but they're not too particular about it. My son puts his purchases on it too, and this keeps the level up. Will try to find out more.

Go the Dockers!!:D

Cheers

Application for Bunnings Trade Cash Card can be downloaded at www.bunnings.com.au, "Contact Us", "Trade Customers".

A business card will suffice. I do have an ABN, but I seem to recall using just my business card. Minimum monthly spend is $200. Some months I spend nothing and others I'll spend thousands, and they accept the erratic nature of my business.:)

Cheers

I have a bunnings card and l have found that its almost useless now as they have removed so many of their items from the discount trade list.
Vinsan salvage near Bayswater is a good yard for timber amongst other things.I picked up a roller door there for $50 a timber gate $10 a $600 retic controller for free.
Katies , is a bathroom and kitchen product store and l have never been able to beat their prices any where else.Their tap ware is a bit pricey though and worth comparing with others.
Decor 2 Go cant be beaten on their price for blinds, timber, vertical or venetian.Yes you may have to cut some to size but its worth it.Just slow and steady. or you can pay someone $25 per blind to be cut.
Solver paints cant be beaten on price or quality[my opinion] get a trade card there its worth gold.
Cape salvage is still around although l reckon they are a bit pricey.Just after home shows ect these salvage yards often have the kitchen displays for sale at a huge reduction on price. You would have to make sure its gonna fit your kitchen though.
Light shades are a good buy at WA salvage glass surrounds with white/silver or gold backing plate can be bought from as little as $6.oo.These are great for bedrooms and hallways.
Carpet can be bought well at Carpet Supermarket in Osborne Park. They have a good range of rental prop carpet. Will rip up and take away old stuff for $100.You cant even get a mini skip for that.
Door knobs, or handles l found at WA Salvage, same brand as bunnings just $5 a set cheaper.
Kitchens. Kit kraft kitchens are a great help if you want to DYI a kitchen. The Mandurah store is brilliant.
Security screens or doors can be painted with panel paint.[the car stuff]They can make any colour you like into a spray can. costs about $20.00 per can which is a pretty cheap way of making an old door or screen look a million bucks.
If you have verticals and dont want the expence of replacing them they can be cleaned.[l,ve even painted the cloth ones with great sucess]in WA there is a company called Amazing clean. they are well priced and also repair any damage.they also do venetians
Glass sliding door and window runners/wheels are about $10 cheaper each to buy from a specialised glass installer than from a bunings store.ie Balcatta Glass.
I,m worn out now
Rich Hart 2nds in osborne park is pretty hard to beat on price.
I had to replace a hot water service and l bought it from the hot water doctor $200 cheaper than anywhere and l didnt have to use him to install it.
cheers yadreamin

Hi,

If you go to the Kresta Blinds webside their is a DIY blind company listed called Innercity Window Coverings where they have prices for blinds and curtains for standard windows or can be cut to size.

Ikea has stainless steel handles for kitchens etc at reasonable prices and lighting as well.

Trees-A-Green in Forrestfield is excellent for plants at wholesale prices and their is a landscaping and soil place down the road.

I got a great discount using a local glass company to do my showerscreen instead of using a company like Stegbar.

Um, I bought all paint in bulk from Bunnings. Big tins work out cheaper than buying a couple of 4 litre tins.

Thats all I can remember at the moment. Have fun renovating.

Yadreamin I finally got over to Rick Hart seconds in Osborne Park, what a great resource. Amazing place for stoves, fridges, air cons, dishwashers. They'll even put packages together for you. For those who haven't been, most of the stuff is end of line or ex display out of the box.

Hi all

I have found the small around the cnr elec. appliance store to do me better deals than any of the big stores - went to fridge and washer city cannington and got a price $700 cheaper than any other store = on my bosch wall oven and I still haven't seen my washing machine at the price I paid there 4 years ago.

I have a bunnings card, the disc is crappy.

Celeste

I thought I might just tag on to this useful Perth list rather than start a new thread.

Anyone know a place where I can source pebbles for landscape work at a reasonable price? I've only found soils aint soils so far.
