Why a house price crash is off the table. For now...

hobo-jo, Are there ANY new jobs created, ANY at all ? Or maybe that's not worth writing about because it will not sell any extra papers.;) There are jobs to be taken out there yet we still have unemployment, just look at the fruit pickers story in the news recently. How is it that we need to...

Insulation in an almost flat roof

R is for the resistance to heat transfer. Air is an insulator. ;-) A 50mm polystyrene sheet would still leave 100mm air gap between itself and the metal roof so even if somehow the cavity could be air sealed condensation/moisture would not be a problem unless the tin roof leaks inside. The...

Insulation in an almost flat roof

Not unless your place was on fire. :D The normal polystyrene is the cheapest and cleanest solution if you DIY, you can also look at fire resistant polystyrene, polyurethane or rockwool as an alternative to bats. Personally I'd go for the 50mm polystyrene which would have twice the R value of...

Will RBA reduce rates by 0.25% or 0.50% in September

Agree, 0.5% first and then another 0.25% before the end of the year

    Landscaping with artificial grass

Sir Walter IS a Buffalo grass :D Good choice, very little maintenance required and once established very little watering. I feed mine twice a year, water it once a week in summer and don't bother watering in winter. Get someone to cut it every 4 weeks in summer and once every 3 months in winter.

    Landscaping with artificial grass

yes, 1) It does start to look more natural after about 6 months 2) After 2-3 years you'll start to have weeds growing in it 3) If ants are a problem in your area make sure they don't nest under it

Banning of electric hot water and regular light bulbs

Sure you can still get them, they use a heat pump rather then the old fashion electric element but they are still nice and chunky. :D

Banning of electric hot water and regular light bulbs

You must have got the pick of the bunch then. :D I had no option to go for natural gas so I went for a simple large electric storage connected to Smartpower, $800 and 5 years warranty. My neighbor paid $2200 after the gov. rebate for a solar + electric booster with a 10 years warranty, without...

Banning of electric hot water and regular light bulbs

No, I wasn't confusing them with PV panels and I don't think much of them either. I have used some shade tolerant Unisols for a few years and wasn't to impress with the power output v. initial costs of the setup.

Banning of electric hot water and regular light bulbs

And so is the service & maintenance costs afterwards. But it does give one that nice, warm & fuzzy feeling that he's doing something for the planet, even if the emissions generated by producing & servicing the solar unit are much greater then any reductions ever hoped to be made by changing to a...

    My Fellow Australians Help Me

I'd look at realestate.com.au find one that fits your needs and talk to the RE agent. Not if you keep your loot in US$, the AUD has dropped 10c in the last few weeks and I think it has another 10c to go over the next few months. On the other hand the interest rates are falling soon so there...

    Calling the contrarians

Plenty more to go down yet, why buy now and have to average down when you can wait and buy below $ 500 soon? It may be "cheap" today only if you bought last month but its not at or below replacement value, like a lot of properties are at the moment. If you want to look at it "based on...

Becoming an investor from very little???

You could do that but what if nothing happens over the next 10 years, you've invested (wasted) 10 years in waiting. Will you wait another 10 ? I'd go with what L.A said, while you sit and wait deciding which way to go why not rent it out and get the tax benefits ? In 6 years or so when you have...

Slab or timber? I'm confused :(

Was that quote for 40 mm or 400 mm ? :D Seriously, 40mm is not even a full truckload of concrete. Don't know where you live or how much is the concrete in your part of the woods but 1K should be enough for 3 cubic meters. Otherwise BUY a cement mixer & get the premix bags from Bunnings. Add...
