    Liberal Federal Govt

Decision expected this afternoon. Indies are getting their final offers from the majors at 9AM. I'm expecting a Coalition government, though with some surprising regional sweeteners.

Exactly. The NBN as it stands is a first class solution. It aggrivates me when people suggest it'd be obsolete within a decade, as clearly it won't. Whether it's worth building at the cost of $44bn or whatever it is is a question I'm happy to let others argue about. :)

The point I'm attemtping to convey is that it's a furfie that fibre optics will be outdated any time soon. Surely we can agree to that? And by the way, when have I ever said anything about "fibre optics is the only thing that is fast"? I think you have me confused me with someone else!

I find the argument that optical fibre connections will be outdated in the not too distant future immensley frustrating. It's grossly misinformed. The fact is as long as the speed of light is the limiting factor in physics, there is no better way to transfer information than optical fibre, as...

Sorry, it's Oakeshott that wants the ETS not Windsor. Listening to him last night on Lateline he sounds more like a Green than an ex-National. Wants the NBN, ETS and no offshore processing of asylum seekers, etc. But they've made it clear that policy is not the main factor in their decision...

The Mining Tax would have offset the discount to the Company Tax rate and rise in Superannuation, so I would expect those two to drop off the radar.

He is a WA National, a different breed to your typical National. I believe they consider themselves apart from the Coalition, however I'm sure someone with local knowledge will give you the better inside info! The WA Nationals ended up propping up the Liberals in WA state elections, so it's...

Even under a Coalition minority government we may still have a Mining tax too! Looks like the ALP have now secured 73 seats. Both the Greens member in Melbourne and independent MP Tony Windsor support the tax, along with the Greens in the Senate, so it could be passed next year when the new...

Will be interesting to see how the negotiations go. It may well be that a Coalition minority government would have to back the NBN. http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/poll-puts-nbn-telstra-on-hold-20100823-13cdk.html

    Brighton and Toorak of Brisbane?

WW is right, Carindale is a fair distance from Bulimba. Hawthorne river avenues is the top blue chip locale in the area (and perhaps the south side of Brisbane?). That trickes out to Bulimba (mainly south of Oxford St), Norman Park riverside/poets corner, some parts of Balmoral, etc. I've...

Starting a Business. Things to do?

Hi CoastyMike, Are you hosting onshore or offshore? There's obviously a large difference in price and was wondering if a local data centre is worth the additional cost once you get into delivering web sites with serious amounts of traffic. Just curious really. :)

Being one of those pimply IT kids and with some years experience in the finance sector I can assure Dazz that he's taking the correct approach. :) You would not believe the malarkey that goes on. Millions being treated in a way I wouldn't want to treat a hundered!

Hi Austini, Thank you for the introduction to LICs. I need to disversify into shares and after a quick read on LICs I feel comfortable that they match my investment strategy and I will look into them further. Others on here may be interested to know that a LIC roadshow is happening around...

    Combine Stormwater Drain blockages!

I have just returned from Brisbane Square. I have a copy of the Roofwater plan for the surrounding area. It clearly runs all the way down through the street until my property - lucky last! As my property is at the end of the hill, water from at least 10 properties would be gushing down the pipe...

    Combine Stormwater Drain blockages!

Hi Peter, thanks for your thoughts (and well wishes!). Yes this is an established dwelling, and I have no idea if an agreement was drawn up between the parties. The 1946 photography shows that the neighbours property existed back then, but my lot was vacant. That doesn't help much in the grand...
