    Rise of the Creative Class

Working in the public service, I see many creative types, and they are such ******s. They have no technical skills and all decisions they make end up failing because they think high level and ignore the detail. They talk about their creativity as if it were a status symbol that makes them...

    Income protection insurance via super?

My financial adviser is recommending to me that I ramp up my income protection insurance in my super fund. As superannuation is compulsory for everyone and I am sure that many people here have super funds that have income protection insurance inbuilt into it, I am wondering what level of...

What hope do they have with a parent like that?

1st Home Owner, personally I don't think it's a good idea to go around telling other people how to spend their money. I have been there and done that. You should let people do what they want to do because different people have different values. Personally I wouldn't get married and have children...

    Material for debt reduction

Commonsense would say to reduce debt you pay it off. To pay it off you need spare cash. To get spare cash you need to either increase income or reduce spending (or preferably both). If this guy earn a lot then it's not a problem if he has high debt. High debt is not a problem if you can afford it.

Why Must Banks Lift Rates in Line with RBA?

Many people say that the banks must lift their variable mortgage rates in line with the RBA's cash rate. But why? The cash rate is the rate at which banks lend to each other overnight. The variable mortgage rate is the rate at which banks lend to those borrowing to buy homes. Home lending can...

    How to Stop Mouth Breathing

Why Don't Big Banks Invest in Real Estate?

Real estate is the best investment ever. Interest rates now are around 6 per cent. You borrow 6 per cent from the bank. Real estate must go up greater than 6% otherwise investing in real estate would not be profitable. Let's say real estate goes up by 7 per cent and adding rental income you get...

The Australian Article: Property vs Shares

Going back centuries, both gold and real estate seem to be very poor investments, although after the 1970s both have done well. Source: http://images.verifiable.com Source: http://www.dinkumdemocrats.com/ Stock market (DJIA at least) seems to have done very well throughout the last...

    Soros says sell gold

Soros actually purchased a lot of gold in spite of his comments that gold is the ultimate bubble. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8521680.stm Just because something is bubbling, it doesn't mean you should sell. Soros once said, "When I see a bubble, I buy it."

How Do I Become a Property Fund Manager?

Many people I talk to say that they don't like it when their super fund invests in stocks because stocks are risky. They prefer to be invested in residential real estate because Australian property always goes up and is risk free. I know that it is possible to invest in residential real...

    Renting out Tents?

If this economic recession really hits, we are going to see many job losses, which means household income for many people will drop. Many companies choose to reduce employee working hours so they can hold on to their workers. For many it may be a necessity to live in a tent. For others, living...

    Renting out Tents?

Many people say that a house is a necessity, but I disagree. I think that a house is a luxury good because it is possible for a person to live in a tent. If this recession gets really deep and companies cut employee work hours in order to cut expenses, I am sure many workers will be forced to...

    In 5 years time

My guess is that interest rates will fall further, so if you can lock in at the bottom, you'd be doing well. I say you finish uni first. Unfortunately rising unemployment from the economic crisis will hit younger people harder. Employment needs to be safe before you can borrow money.

    Investing Based on Trust

I have been watching a video about a Hollywood guy who is a victim of the Madoff pyramid scheme. He claims that the reason why he invested his money where he did was because he trusted the advisers and because his investments were where all the best, brightest, and richest people invested. This...
