$1000 in Dec 2006 - what is it worth now?

Most of the things 18-21 yo's may buy would be cheaper now. What sort of plasma/LCD would you have gotten for a grand three years ago? Alll electronics type stuff would be heaps cheaper now. Booze - has that really changed that much? Fuel - average price in Dec 2006 according to ACCC doc google...

Ducted air-con, why can't I close my glass sliding doors?

Just have some more open windows! A 'return vent' is for a reverse cycle refrigerative system - which is essentially a closed loop. This is evapourative. You don't need any 'return air vents'. Diverting it into the roof cavity won't really work - out one hole in the ceiling and up another?? Even...

Ducted air-con, why can't I close my glass sliding doors?

Read the link. It's an evapourative system. Not refrigerative. It's all about air flow - evap sucks air in from outside, evapourates some water which sucks the heat out of the air, then pushes it via ducting into the room. It then needs to get out - if the door is shut you need a window open...

    Loosing vs. Losing

Re aitch vs haitch - my understanding was 'aitch' was something the 'upper class' affected during the 1700/1800s in England to differentiate themselves from the proletariat...I personally think haitch is acceptable. I believe literary convention is also to spell out numerals/numbers less than...

    keeping "down" with the jones'

Yay. You have a guru. It has been several hours since I started reading this thread. With a large gap in between. Within that gap was beer. Now all in all this was a reasonably good gap apart from the fact there was lots I wanted to comment on early in the thread which I can no longer remember...

    removing internal wall

LOL. You didn't think this information was relevant when you first posted? I would imagine this completely changes the question, and that pretty much everything debated before this, while useful and interesting, will pretty much have zero application in your specific situation...

    Tax calculator (company vs individual)

Your company can then employ you and pay you wages/etc, so as to benefit from the lower bracket thresholds. Lots of cool things can be done when you can play with two separate entities...

Tax Deductions - Fish Oil and/or Glucosamine

Definitely doesn't count, even towards the 20% tax offset against net medical expenses over $1500 - there is a list of things that DO NOT qualify and this is covered several times I reckon: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?doc=/content/19181.htm&page=2&H2

Interest Tax Write Offs - Do I have this right?

What about the 20K interest you paid? Unless you are doing more exotic things like capitalising interest, that came out of your pocket... 100K at 08/09 rates : tax = 26K. 74K in bank 80K at 08/09 rates : tax = 18K. 62K in bank This ignores any rental income, and other expenses.

    Salary Sacrifice

If your 'govt agency' qualifies as a PBI - public beneficience institution or similar - you may be eligible for special exemptions from FBT -fringe benefits tax. Certain PBIs are eligible for exemptions on a 'grossed up' amount of a) $17000, others b) $30000. The net effect of this is you can...

    The Off Topic Thread

I have now bought four pairs online - ultimately come from HK (and I guess, by default, China). Wonder how the business plan holds up against the online/discount spectacle competition?

    Eating Allen's Party Mix ...

A number of years ago I won three pairs of sunglasses worth $200-300 each. Was the result of actually entering some of those "second chance draws" that you can enter if you don't "win instantly" with some of those scratchy things you can get in chip packets. Thing is, I am pretty sure I only...

Urgent advice required - Purchase 2 properties on 1 contract

Don't stress, happens all the time. Interest will all be deductible as you plan to build and then rent on the vacant block. As to finance, depends on your preference. Personally I don't mind 'cross-collaterising' with multiple titles held as security against multiple loans - but then I have a...

    TC's 2009 farm thread

Probably from 1920's I reckon. The old weathered timber is fantastic for homemade "rustic" furniture. If it has lasted. I remember trying to use the spiked drum of an old thresher as a ghetto lawn aerator but I couldn't make it heavy enough...

    Pool solar heating recomendations?

Don't have a pool but since I'm a bit of a ghetto/DIY type of guy I've always figured I would just get a whole heap of 13mm polypipe and fittings and rig something up myself. Would just need to make sure there is enough polypipe in parallel so as not to create too much pressure. Heaps of...
