Hi all, Haven't been around for a while- took a pay cut to do my PhD so investing has been off of our table for a while. We're looking at have a new set of timber stairs constructed for our post-war PPOR in Salisbury (Brisbane). Can you recommend anyone? Also, would you recommend doing the...

    Life in Adelaide

Agree, but for primary school I don't think it matters so much, especially with engagement from parents at home. I went to primary school in Lockleys and my husband in Edwardstown and we both received a good education and have post-grad qualifications now- I wouldn't have any qualms about...

    Life in Adelaide

Mile End & Torrensville are lovely, if we moved back to Adelaide we would buy around there. My parents live in Flinders Park which is a nice suburb too, it is definitely on the up, especially if you live along the river where there is a great bike/walking track (called Linear Park) that runs...

Any ideas how to improve this back yard area?

Without knowing what's under the concrete and bricks, I'd say remove the concrete, bricks and sandpit, grow another couple of hedges to extend the current hedge to the corner, extend the grass over where the concrete is, and put in a few more plants- I think that area will look lovely when the...

    Attractive damp loving trees?

I would suggest Melaelucas but they will probably drink your dam water :) See if your council has any kind of list of the species that are indigenous to your suburb as these are often the best ones for your soil & conditions. How tall do you want the new trees to grow? Some attractive...

    Gas bottles?

When we installed bottled gas for our new HWS, 2 cylinders were recommended for couples/small houses and 3 cylinders for larger houses or those with more than one bathroom. We chose a company that drives past with their gas truck and tops them up fairly regularly, so we never have to ring them...

Rising damp - would you buy?

15 years old and it has that many water ingress problems? I would run far away... especially from the rising damp in the garage, because underground drainage problems can be very costly- where is the wall drainage & damp-proof course? I would also ask why the roof is leaking already. A 15 year...

    Salisbury Brisbane

In my experience, the distinct ethnic background of people moving to the suburb is caucasian Aussie- every owner occupier I have met has grown up in Australia. They are usually University educated and both partners are employed full time (people tend to buy in couples). New arrivals are a mix...

    Salisbury Brisbane

I live in Salisbury and watch the market closely. The only time in the last few years it has been possible to buy a house for 350k has been if the house is better off demolished- I have viewed many of the sub-400k houses and they need serious work. In my view, there has been a definite change...

    Quick Vegetation Clearing Question

Ok. I don't work for DERM and I'm not a planner so I don't know how they make their decisions. It looks as though a lot of the land surrounding your block has already been cleared and this is shown in the veg maps. The veg map that I have used here was made in 2006 and is the most recent version...

No experiences, but I have a GIS coverage of the vegetation types and can tell you if it is endangered, of concern etc- just send me the site coordinates (decimal degrees or easting/northing are good) and I will post the info.

Anyone know how to get aerial/Sat photos?

Use Google Earth- there is a tool called 'Historical Imagery'. You can flick back to around 2001 for my area of Brisbane. The resolution isn't amazing on some of the photos but better than nothing. Otherwise, get the aerial photos from DERM- did this recently for a field site on Straddie and...

The brick cladding can be made from asbestos too- another thing to check!

    The Block 2012

I think she is atrocious too! This season is a flop compared to previous years. The couples don't actually do much other than project management and shopping, Ch9 haven't selected pleasant people to watch on TV (which may be intentional, but I would say that Brad & Lara are the only couple...
