How to get top rental returns?

As a long time renter I'm looking for location, space to live in, tidiness, security, and storage space. As long as the kitchen and bathroom are clean and they work I don't care where the benchtop was quarried from nor how many gigalitres the 9 showerheads in the spa can squirt at me. I rent...

Taking the leap from highly remunerated role to start up business

While not 100% relevant, have a look at this while it's still free (I hope you see it in time): http://www.amazon.com/Day-Startup-Learn-Until-Launch-ebook/dp/B00NZFKB8S - it is specifically about launching a software startup but a lot of the priciples apply to any startup.

    tax receipt tracking

https://www.shoeboxed.com.au is a Sydney-based web app that does this sort of thing. I'm sure there are others. Shoeboxed has been around for a while.

An item to buy only once for life

When I got my first car I bought a set each of imperial and metric K-Mart branded open/ring spanners with my meagre earnings, figuring I'd replace them when they broke and I wasn't. Over the years of building and fixing various cars (that seemed like a good idea at the time but no) those...

There is a guide at http://www.carservice.com.au/car-service-cost/ for different makes / models. There is a comparison engine at http://www.fixedpricecarservice.com.au/ but it was slow / somehat broken when I looked at it Me - VW Golf TDI DSG 2008, anywhere between $250 & 600 per annual...

    Speedtest

Telstra cable so 113 down, 2.5 up & fast pings. The iPad gets 75/2.5 & 11ms pings on wifi. 2.5 mb up. Pathetic. It is technically capable of much, much more. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS#Speed_tables you suck, Tel$tra, NBNCo The best I have seen from a 4G iPhwn is 75/25mb &...

Why not having children is best thing ever

...and offshore yacht-racing, something I used to do a lot before I had a kid. Regrets? No, I like being a parent and it suits this time of my life (mid 40's), it really wouldn't have suited me in my earlier years. I'll be ~65 when my youngest finishes high school whence I plan on kicking us all...

    Learning from mistakes

Pissed my 20's up against stainess steel, ran away to the (Formula One) circus for a couple of years in my 30's, various overseas trips, about 20 cars, knocked back a Bondi beachfront (102 Campbell Pde) unit in 2001 for $400k, bought a yacht instead (my pinnacle, that one), now aged to 45+...

5 year fixed rate under 5.00%

Surely if the CBA is fixing at that rate then they expect variable rates to be lower than that? ... as per the "house always wins" rule of thumb. Or am I (yet again) showing my naive?

    Keeping Track of Everything.. HELP!

Yup - Gmail, they are linked. I moved a few mail accounts, including all the old emails, to gmail a few years ago. Very easy to manage and, of course, search. You can also selectively share Google drive folders and/or Docs with a chosen few. Ditto for Dropbox etc.

PPOR Wishlists: what do you like/wish for/fantastic ideas etc

I respectfully disagree for a few reasons - single SSDs easily transfer way faster than Gigabit ethernet, as do RAID spinning disks, and technology gets faster and cheaper at an accelerating rate. Also, faster networks mean less latency and less contention, you never know how much data you want...

This is a good point. I had a couple of external hard drives that used to cause the modem to drop out all the time. The power supplies were "noisy" and interfered with the modem's power supply. It is worth unplugging as much as you can and/or trying power points on a different circuit...

Try searching at http://bc.whirlpool.net.au Are you near an NBN rollout? Got cable? I get 113mbs, 80GB / month on cable for $80-90 (I forget which) / month on Telstra Naked cable. It's not on their front page, you have to ask for it via their online chat or phone them.
