Share your story if retired before 53 in Australia

I was 52. I am 55 now.I stopped working when I was 52. We owned a small business for 19 years that allowed us to buy shares and property. We decided that the value of the business was a dangerously high percentage of our net worth, so with our accountant's encouragement we sold it. This...

    NRL Premiers Major Sponsor

The point I was trying to make is that it would have been unthinkable, say, 10 yeas ago for a mainstream professional sporting team to be sponsored by a company that assists property investors. I think that it is an indication of just how significant in today's economy the property investment...

    NRL Premiers Major Sponsor

Does anyone else think that when one of the major sponsors of an NRL team is a property depreciation company it is an interesting comment on the prominence of property investing in Australia today?

How long did it take you to save for your first property?

My First Property It was 1982-1984. My recollection is that it took me about 2 years. The house was in Malvern, Victoria. It cost $84,000. I saved about 1/3 of the purchase price and borrowed 2/3. I was earning about the average wage at the time, and interest rates were around 10-11%.

Well Done! Good work Oscar! Your story is a validation of the Jan Somers philosophy. Buy as many assets as you can as early as possible, and wait for them to appreciate over time.

How soon can you realistically retire?

I am guessing your post should read..."Being so young". I certainly do not feel so young. We have moved as much as we could into super over the past 7-8 years. and plan to continue with this strategy. Our SMSF contains shares and property.

How soon can you realistically retire?

I am 54, and was able to "retire" at 52. This was mostly accomplished through owning and then selling a small business. While owning the the business we diversified into properties and shares, and since selling the business we have diversified further, mostly into more shares. Starting early...

    Leaving a great job

We had a similar choice to make and went ahead and did it I am 54yo. Along with IPs and shares, we owned a small business that was 50% of our asset base. It had provided us with a substantial income for many years, but owning it meant that we were not very diversified. Given our age, my wife is...

    High Yielding Shares Again

Vts Yes, Harro is correct. VTS is an ASX listed ETF. It has management costs of only 0.05%. It is unhedged, so any variation in the AUD/USD rate will affect the price of VTS units. The dividends do attract a 15% withholding tax. This makes the investment quite different to an Australian ETF...

    High Yielding Shares Again

Common Sense On Mutual Funds, by John C Bogle I too have a well thumbed copy of this little book.I am always refreshing my reading of it. I especially like the quotes from people like Buffett and Munger. One Warren Buffett quote that stands out.......... "Most investors, both...

    High Yielding Shares Again

Index Funds I have been an investor in shares for over 20 years. When I calculated that the returns I made from buying and holding broad based low cost Listed Investment Companies like AFI and Argo beat the returns that I generated from buying and selling individual shares, I realised that the...

    Catalyst for Investing

School fees were the catalyst. I was an employee at the time, and it occurred to me that if I wanted to offer our family the chance to send our children to a private school, I was unlikely to be able to afford it. It set me on the path of investing in businesses, property and equities.

    Harry Browne's Permanent Portfolio

But the AUD has nearly doubled in the last ten years.. Unless there was some way to hedge the fund, wouldn't the fact that the AUD has nearly doubled vs the USD over the last ten years negatively affect the fund's performance for Australians?

We have owned a property in North Carlton for five years , and are very happy that we do. I think it is a fantastic area. Quiet, wide streets, brilliant amenities, close to the city, close to a variety of types of employment. I believe that it is an area that has a great deal to recommend it ...
