    Recession likely in Australia

Not more than 12 months Well, there is plenty of money looking for a home. The problem so far has been that everyone is afraid to lend to others but this will change, confidence will come back and things will get back to normal. IMHO

    Recession likely in Australia

I do, for the reasons outlined in his article. btw, I doubt that the global slowdown will be long lasting because there is plenty of money to go around. It's fear stopping people from spending but fear does not last forever. I am over it and have already started spending :) Cheers

GP Large financial institutions (despite their falling share prices) have sound financial position and when the worries go away they will start spending again. Cheers

    Recession likely in Australia

It's hard to believe that Australians are doing it tough, it doesn't look like it. Resourse companies until now were screaming for staff and a temporary slowdown means that they could stop hiring new staff or lay off some excess staff. Our company is still advertising positions. Not as many...

    Recession likely in Australia

Kenneth I actually believe that we won't see a recession because gov. measures will prevent it. They are spending a lot of money to avoid it. At the same time we had drastic interest rate cuts and this is an additional boost to people's ability to spend. Until recently our bank balance...

    Recession likely in Australia

Not to mention how dissapointed I was seeing our prime minister announcing on TV that we are having the worst economic crisis in our lifetime. I thought, what is this guy doing? Even if we were having it that bad, which we are not, he shouldn't have said it on national tv because if we...

    Recession likely in Australia

Then one day the RBA woke up and decided to go hard in the other direction and the government instead of sitting down and working together with the RBA on a solution they decided to go their own way and to spend our surplus. I don't know about you but I have little confidence in the RBA and...

    Recession likely in Australia

GP It does actually, (as peter nicely explained) and it also keeps our loan repayments low so we have less reason to put our rents up. I also don't buy the argument about the RBA being totaly independent. If our government appoints at least some of the board members, then surely the RBA...

    Recession likely in Australia

I agree, I think it shows that they lack experience. 10b would have been better spent doing essential infrastructure work. If they wanted to help people and to make us spend more they could have done it by making sure interest rates dropped faster.
