Another vote for pools are not that much work. Avoid slate edging - my folks pool will need the edging replaced (20 years on). Slate that is sometimes wet and sometimes dry crumbles. The slate fully enclosed by water is fine. Although I doubt slate is fashionable now, so you should be fine...
