Agreed. If there is going to be a DD (I highly doubt it) I just hope they reform the Senate voting system first. Can you imagine the size of the ballot paper otherwise, with twice the number of seats on offer? The preference flow possibilities would do my head in...

On this mandate idea, Tony Abbott didn't respect Kevin Rudd's mandate from 07 on an ETS so I really struggle to see why Labor should suddenly fold on this. If they did, I could only conclude they are a bunch of completely spineless jellies who believe in nothing. IMO they have a duty to...

Even Tony Abbott himself suggested it as a good idea back in the day. But I wouldn't worry about it - there are many ways to achieve the same objective and Australia's emissions are reducing nicely as we speak despite our economy which keeps growing at the same time - none of that will stop...

Does anyone know how many of these "other" parties support removing the carbon tax? I haven't been keeping up to date... Although no doubt they will want to take some skin off the govt on their own pet issues to let it pass. Otherwise it's back for a double dissolution in short order and...

Of course - the audience in general is only interested in the difficult questions - not the easy ones. Same goes when Mr Rudd goes on - he is not going to get the easy questions either. It's up to Mr Abbott in your above example to turn the question around from the first one and convince us...

You can't properly submit yourself to the judgement of the Australian people by hiding from them. Q&A is by far the highest rating political commentary show in Australia. I would have thought a hour long grilling by an open audience is the least thing anyone can do who aspires to high office...

The Murdoch papers are a joke IMO. I get very little of anything valuable out of them but the wife still insists on buying them. They were instrumental in getting Rudd elected in '07, which is worth remembering... although they're unlikely to remind us of that fact. The ABC may be biased to...

This is all true Peter but can I just point out the ATO got their money. It was the investors and bankers who lost money - not the ATO. Comparing the ATO's debt recovery powers with those of banks and investors is like comparing chalk and smelly cheese...

I didn't know those insulation businesses owed the ATO any money? If they went broke, it's doubtful... As for Messrs Skase and Bond, I guess if you're prepared to enter into an arrangement like this to either spend considerable time in jail or live outside Australia, or for that matter...

I agree. I just wish Abbott would campaign on this because right now the electorate is very sympathetic to this argument. He doesn't need all the entitlement stuff like PPL etc to win this election. If he just went out there and stayed true to his beliefs, he would win. Just like Thatcher -...

I agree it's policy on the run and I can't see anyone quantifying how much it will cost - I remember there were considerable savings from the idea of going to 1 month BAS statements because of the cash flow effect. I expect this will cost the Budget quite a lot actually but we aren't hearing...

By the way, while we're at it, this would be great for us: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-08-23/rudd-vows-to-cut-red-tape-burden-of-gst-reporting-for-small-bus/4907854 I hate filling out BAS statements every three months!

There are imputation credits on both the mining tax and the carbon tax! They reduce profit - thereby reducing the payment of company tax for that entity. It's the same thing!

    Rudd vAbbott

Fantastic! So, the same logic then applies to the Carbon Tax / ETS. And while we're at it, we may as well double company tax and helicopter the cash on families from the sky! Don't worry, it's all an increase on economic activity so that means it must be a good idea! Sigh...

For a big business paying 30% company tax who used to get franking credits on the full amount - they will now only get franking credits on 28.5%. That is the difference. They will still pay 30% "tax" but they won't be able to fully frank their dividend as this bit is a "levy", not a "tax"...

Sorry Bayview but this is the second time you have said this. I suggest doing a bit of research on the MRRT before you accuse it of being a Carbon Tax or Emission Trading Scheme. Not that there's anything wrong with broadening the tax base but you wouldn't know it these days... :(

I can also remember a time when he was a very effective campaigner who brought a lot of people with him and won a significant majority in the Parliament against one of Australia's most respected PMs. But in this campaign he is reminding us all of the side of him that you describe, I agree. He...

It started with the debate where we had high expectations but were sorely disappointed - I think his biggest mistake was the GST scare campaign - most people's reaction was "what's he on about - where did that come from?". Following the promise not to be negative it was just too much! The...

I've gotta say that this campaign so far has been absolutely terrible by Rudd. For someone with a proven strong campaign record, this time he appears to have forgotten how to do it??? They'll lose by more than 20 seats if they keep this up... :)
