No. Modern direct injection engine technology requires certain oil types. All modern low ash fully synthetic oils (which Mazda, Honda etc now use) are far more expensive than older, semi-synthetic oils. Look at the price to service a Mazda 3 and it will not be far off. In fact, over 50,000kms...

A standard service at vw for my car is $480. I get it for $280 from my independent specialist. Vw approved oil, vw parts but no outrageous gouging on time and labour. Moat of that $280 is for the vw approved oil.

They make the money on finance and servicing. Car dealers are finance dealers. The cars are just the product.

Maintenance is key. A well maintained car with 200,000kms is going to be more reliable in the long term than a poorly maintained car with 100,000kms

I've just been going through a slightly similar thing. I'm selling my 50k (new) VW and buying a 10k runaround. I do 40,000km a year so want something with a bit of comfort, otherwise I'd go even cheaper. The money can go to paying down debt on my land. Once things are finalised with the...

I'd go for replacing the car, but given your finances, aims etc go for a reliable 2-4 year old car for less money.
