Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

I propose the return to this Until we have eliminated every conceivable danger from the road ;)

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Ah yes, you state that I have no consideration for safety, and you imply that I don't care about other people, but I'm the one descending into a slanging match. Of course. Silly me.

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

If you think that section of road is highly dangerous, then please just hand in your licence. I drove it every day for years. At both 110 and 90. Unless it is foggy, in which case people should slow down without the need for signs, it is perfectly safe to do at 110. If it is dangerous...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Why is it 90 southbound but 100 northbound? Overtaking in the far left is perfectly legal as well - and is generally caused by drivers not paying attention and being Middle Lane Morons - lane discipline in this country is simply abysmal. Sit in the middle lane doing 1 under the speed limit...

The number of deaths on the road in the NT increased in the 6 years from 07 compared to the 6 years prior to 07 http://news.drive.com.au/drive/motor-news/open-speed-limits-for-territory-20130508-2j6zy.html There are a lot of different factors at play in the NT, and a lot of the issues are...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Oh yeah, I don't doubt it for a second. It is one thing that I never skimp on. Hell, even when I had a a 3k bucket it had excellent brake pads and rotors and the best tyres I could find. My latest set set me back $1200 for a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 tyres. But, if you don't care...

Apologies if you thought brigade was somehow insulting. How about group? Can I use group? Motor Magazine put the new Chrysler 300C down as having a braking distance from 100 as 38.72 metres. And this can be done time and time again without fade. US Car and Driver Magazine published the...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Yep. I love driving in Europe. Much more traffic but much more respect for the process of driving. If people were serious about road safety they would look at what rubber they put on their car. I just replaced the tyres on my car. I spent a lot of cash to get the best possible...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

All of that is bang on. I do a fair bit of work out at Cobar. The highway is long, straight, with excellent visibility and good surface. It is a prime candidate for a 130 increase. That extra 30kms an hour wouldn't be bad for fatigue either. There is a huge need for better driver...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Bayview. Good post. I am all for more stringent controls in built up areas, and lower speed limits in certain areas. Let's face it. Doing 60 down a suburban street where kids are playing is more dangerous than doing 120 down a freeway. Particularly to other users. The mantra should not be...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

So a country with lower population, lower density and greater distances means lower speed limits because... Actually, no, don't answer that. We need better driver training first. Then look at increasing the speed limits. In regards to fatalies per 100,000 vehicles, Australia sits roughly...

As long as they pull back in and don't do the I'm doing 70.5 and they are doing 70 shuffle then I always leave plenty of room.

Those kind of drivers cause far more issues than the guys doing 5 or 10 over the limit.

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Car safety increasing over time - dramatically, improvement in road standards including better awareness of things like camber etc. That said, the New England is not a good example of 130 - What I meant was I do those kind of kms a year on those kind of roads, so very little in the city. The...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

I do 50,000kms a year, nearly all on freeways and country roads (New England, Barrier, Mitchell Highways) 130 makes sense given all the factors at play.
