I designed my wife's engagement ring myself, sent the design to Dubai, they made it and I paid and picked it up. I paid less than $5k, insurance value was $18k. I stuffed up, and should have gone for a cheaper ring IMO. My advice is buy diamonds below 1 carat (say 0.98), at 1 carat the price...
