Not as uncommon as it sounds. Some landlords are happy land banking.
Someone I know was renting out a ~$800k+ Patterson Lakes property (had a private boat mooring) for ~$250pw.
Someone else I know is renting out a ~$550K Parkdale/Moridalloc property for ~$100pw.
In my opinion the consensus is the "rent vs buy" argument is a much of muchness one in regards to investment over the long term.
The real indicator of how well off you will be in my humble opinion is (in order of importance);
1. Your personal investment/business savvyness.
