Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

Because the GST is only collected by the Feds (the revenue is distributed to the states and territories), my understanding is that any changes to the rate can only be done with the agreement of all the governments (federal / state / territory). Not impossible, but not simple either.

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

I bet someone, somewhere, high up in your party is secretly shitting themselves at the mere thought that the ALP might be able to free themselves of the deadweight that is the union movement. People worry about the strangest things you know.

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

Which, based on unsurprisingly unenthusiastic responses from union thugs, may yet be a 3rd party leader... himself.

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

Bill Shorten under fire over proposals for Labor reform Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's proposals for reforming the Labor Party will do nothing to prevent another Eddie Obeid or Ian Macdonald emerging in NSW, senior ALP members have warned. Anthony D'Adam, a member of the state's ALP...

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

I admit that the ALP is up crap creek, in a leaking boat, with no paddle and a broken compass. So I, for one, am not questioning how bad a situation the ALP finds themselves in. I just don't think they are irredeemable. ...It is only a start and talk is cheap (but it is a start). I...

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

He wasn't continuing the debate. His side won. He's having a crow about it. I don't care about Labour or Liberal winning. Imho you can't get too worked up about these things (one side winning or not winning), because if you did, then it must completely suck when your preferred side is out...

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

He's removed 2 party leaders. They just happened to both be PM at the time. (Yes it is unusual to roll a PM and it has not happened since McMahon rolled Gorton, and even then Gorton could have stayed on but opted to step down. Happens a lot more in opposition - I guess because when you're...

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

To be fair (since I actually dislike all political parties equally) - I should note that while CPI targeting has been good for the economy (imo) - what happened before that was reprehensible. John Edwards (at one point Chief Economist at HSBC) wrote Paul Keating's Biography (Edwards used to...

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

I was not aware if that. Shorten isn't the first, and he won't be the last, lifelong unionite to rise to the top level in the ALP. I wouldn't be so sure. You could have said the same thing about Bob Hawke when he was elected in 1983. And then he bought in the Accord which, it could be...

Bill Shorten moves to distance Labor from union movement

In another thread I said that I believe that having strong political parties is essential to a robust democracy that makes better decisions for the citizens and residents of Australia. As such I hope this is all true. As reported here. BILL Shorten is severing century-old ALP ties with the...
