I'll bite :p The ring I chose cost around a 5th of hubby's fortnightly take home pay. Good quality diamond, the exact setting etc that I wanted ( I walked into the store saw it and immediately said "that's the one" - no looking at price tags etc). Did help though that the jeweler was closing...

buy a diamond - ask her to help you design the ring to her liking. Will probably cost a lot less and end up better quality. Also remember it's not always about size - clarity, colour and cut also make a difference to price.
