Ok so now we have comments that need to be read into and also you need to be a certain gender to have a hope of understanding and yet if someone doesn't get the perfect and exact meaning intended by the poster they are twisting the words to suit themselves. Hhhhmmm Send them off to boarding...

One more try then. I don't know maybe because people perpetuating negative stereotypes and myths that reflect poorly on myself, my family and many other fine, highly educated and social adept people kind of bugs me. When those people then resort to insulting me rather than engaging in reasoned...

Now who has comprehension problems? I didn't say that is what you said, I said it is what I was picturing. As for the rest of what you said, you know exactly what you said and you know exactly what you meant. You know exactly how you meant the "glaringly obvious" remark, generally negative...

And I'm picturing such a poor parent she looks forward to being able to get away from her kids each day by sending them to school and fantasizes about drugging them. Not sure what either picture really adds to the discussion though.

Sorry I didn't put an appropriate emoticon with that part, I thought the tongue in cheek tone would suffice. I was being a bit facetious and not serious.

Well then my apologies for the wrong conclusion. I guess the start of your post....... "I've just found this thread and thought I'd mention the two glaringly obvious things that nobody seems to have touched on." Led me to believe that your comments regarding these two "glaringly obvious...

Just for the record and in case there is any misconception, my family is what would generally be referred to as non practicing Catholic. We were all baptized and growing up we went to church at Christmas and Easter. The 13 children in total is because mum and dad always wanted lots of children...

I probably shouldn't bother but I guess I'm a sucker for punishment...... All valid concerns. However, just because you can't imagine being able to do it yourself that is not an indictment of the home schooling process or those that do it. I can't imagine studying and training for 10 years...

Home Schooling (split off from Early Retirement thread)

Wow it seems odd that so many supposedly emotionally well adjusted and superbly educated people who went through the regular schooling system and who claim homeschooling produces emotionally stunted and poorly educated individuals have to resort to veiled insults towards me rather than discuss...

No those qualifications are not required if one wants to homeschool their children. Just as one does not need qualifications to have a child to begin with or to raise their children the way they see fit. Just as if one were to teach their child to drive they would not have to be a qualified...

Are you serious or just trolling? Teachers have to go to university to get a degree because there are regulations and qualifications one needs in order to be allowed to work as a paid teacher.

Firstly, I have not "shut down" anyone. I have engaged in discussion with others in an attempt to shed some light on the subject and correct the many misconceptions and negative stereotyping that was being displayed in the thread. If that is your definition of shutting down then you obviously...

In the majority of cases the parent is forced to this conclusion after the system has repeatedly failed their child/children. It is comparitively rare that any parents decide before their child ever attends school that they "can do better than the entire system". And frankly, of your two...

I don't know of too many situations in life that are based on a group of identically aged people interacting within a strict environment with enforcable rules punishable by disciplinary action and overseen by an authority figure. Maybe I live a wierd life though. As for teachers letting kids...

Well if you want to talk extreme examples anything one learns from any source might just be the one thing they need to save their life!!!!!! So I guess no schooling is any good because no matter what you are going to miss out on certain experiences one way or another and are never going to...

Home Schooling (split off from Early Retirement thread)

Actually interacting with a moderately large group of people who are all the same age as yourself in an artificially constructed environment with strict and supposedly enforcable rules under the supervision of an authority figure most of the time is not a very useful skill at all. It is one...

And you base this claim on what evidence exactly? Besides your assumption that home schooled people sit at home all day interacting only with their parents and siblings in an emotionally stunted way?

There's a whole lot of baseless assumptions going on about home schooling here. My family lived on a farm some distance from the nearest school. As such my elder brothers and I were schooled at home via the Correspondence School of NSW so I don't really count that as "home schooling"...
