No need to be sorry to me. IMHO in this situation its better to abide by the governing safety regs than end up facing a coronal enquiry feeling sorry for yourself.

Some how I dont think that justification will stand up to scrutiny in the coroners court.

Being a sparky I can definitely tell you that you need to use sparky - its illegal otherwise, not to mention very very dangerous.
