Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

i'm dumbfounded that so many people can't distinguish between cause and effect. the cause of the fatal accidents very rarely is speed. the effect of speed is that people die. eliminate the cause and you don't need to worry about the effects.

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

does it mean we can expect 130 limit on the roads that have 4 lanes each way?

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

correct. and i still maintain that we are better off teaching people how to drive so they don't have accident at all, rather than decrease the speed limit so they have an accident and stay crippled for the rest of their lives, but we can report that road toll went down. . the answer is really...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

i'm sorry i must've left my maths glasses somewhere how is 7.2 40% higher than 5.8? you are right saying that speed is a factor in road deaths. but unfortunately, i isn't a major factor in road accidents. i worked for various insurance companies for a while, and let me tell you...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

mate i'm an IT person. when people tell me there is a problem, i want to see facts. for example, when people tell me their system has **** performance, i want to know what **** looks like exactly, in terms of seconds per transactions. with this whole "speed" business, we haven't seen...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

no i wasn't. but i know it was quite common to knock down a couple at a pub and then drive back home. so if you are going to be telling me that better (questionably) enforcement of speed limits is responsible for safer roads than i'm going to call you a liar. because if it was, we wouldn't have...

what's more interesting is that if you look at the world data on the same site, germany is not too far off with 6.something per 100,000 population. with the speedlimits being higher than aus, population almost 4 times higher than aus, and country being much smaller than aus. plus all the crazy...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

not sure why you say that. the limits should be adjusted to reflect the conditions of the road, not what some dodgy politicians think they should be

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

i'm talking about the stunt in the original post. they saved 70 minutes by driving 130 on the open road when going between melbourne and sydney there is no such thing as "australian conditions". the roads are different everywhere. some are safe to do 150, some aren't safe to do even 60.

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

i'd go for 130, possibly 150 most people already do 130 on highways without any problems anyway. speed limit of 110+ 10% that you are allowed for various tolerances, plus another 9km/h for when you stop watching the speedo - voila, you are going 130 on the long drives it saves quite a...
