The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

Why would you do that? I would need a better argument than "What goes up must come down" before I bet against against the rampaging A$. If you really believe the A$ is overvalued, don't shift loans, just hedge on the Fx markets. Much simpler. :D

So when the dogs start barking it, the contrarian moves on. The dogs have been barking "buy res property" for years now.

I doubt I'm considered a seasoned investor so does that make me a vacuum cleaner? I'm still trying to figure out Mono's real meaning.

The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

"Making money" involves the future. How can you invest without having an opinion about the future? Even saying "nothing will change" is an opinion and you should be able tell us why you think that.

The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

Yes, I agree. "The City" style banking thrives when the general economy thrives and there is a flurry of excitement causing merger and acquisition activity and new companies are listing on the exchanges. Do BHP and RIO need the services of Macquarie very often? I see better opportunities...

The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

I am saying that Australian workers (outside the resource sector) have reached a plateau in their wealth, at least until the next boom in banking and finance and I won't still be alive then so I'm not going to invest with that expectation. If there is a general increase in pay packets it will...

The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

I'm reluctant to mention the greater fool effect lest it be thought that I am calling property investors "fools". I'm not! But there can be no doubt that the US housing bubble was driven by the expectation that there will be a greater fool next year. To be fair, that is what also drives share...

The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

I read that somewhere else this morning. From The West Australian (whatever) was it? Again it doesn't fit my description of NEW MONEY. The wealth effect will be welcome for the beneficiaries but if they can only sell to other beneficiaries then that is the equivalent of taking in each others'...

I agree. So if you are in Sydney, "Good luck!", you'll need it. :)

But I maintain that it takes NEW WEALTH to drive prices higher. Where is that new wealth coming from, keeping in mind my earlier posts about double incomes and cheaper consumer goods?

Reply to the whole post, Don't just find something to be picky about. If those people had money in their pockets they would BUY!

From today's local paper: "More than 2,000 people are on the waiting list for public housing in Townsville but only 7% will find a home this year". "Townsville has experienced near-record population growth, despite the economic downturn. The city's population grew by 5606 people or 3.2% in...

The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

There is another "once only" event that has put more dollars into pockets for housing since the seventies, and that was the massive reduction in the cost of household manufactured goods. Talk to an oldie about how expensive things were in the Menzies era. The dismantling of trade barriers...

The RBA, Interest rates and house prices

I'd rather have teeth pulled than subject myself to the banks' arrogance and incompetence unnecessarily. All that for a mere 30k? YUK My son wanted a sum around that size and the banks gave him a royal run around and tried to rip him off. So I gave it to him and said if he doesn't pay it back...

I always use a CC but deny I'm "financially irresponsible". It's the convenience, and the Qantas points are a bonus.

Have you considered that it just may have been the emergence of the "double income household" that has fueled this double decadal price rise? If it was, what will fuel the next one? Have you stress tested your investments against ten years of low growth and do they still work? Why the bear...
