Speaking of Twiggy: This super tax is applied after state royalties but before financing costs. Could be like a Nth Korean torpedo for Twiggy. I imagine he is highly geared.

I hope not too many here used the Rubber Ball Theory of Stock Selection. Someone spoke of buying BHP after the initial fall, I assume on the basis that "good" stocks always rebound. (It wasn't IV as I remember but he did argue that it's intrinsic value hadn't changed) I hope sanity prevailed and...

I remember the local dealer telling people walking in off the street with those $200 coins to take them to the bank. But he was a genuine numismatist. It was he who introduced me to the guy selling the set I spoke of above. He didn't want them. They were under spot at the time.

Been buying for a while. Ag was A$7/oz when I started. Bought a boxed set of four of these: for $500. Sadly did not include Journey Begins but it is a beautiful coin and going for $1,000 on it's own.

An hour ago I looked at the Kitco gold site and literally EVERYTHING (including the UA$) was down bar the J yen. I'm happy too because I've got a qtr mil in the Loony which is up >5%. Diversification at work. :)

If we are talking of the same guy (I'm sure we are. :D) I musta missed that bit. He seemed dyed-in-the-wool Keynesian. If he were still with us I'm sure he would defend Henry's Super Tax.

Of course they did. GS "front runs" their client's buy/sell orders with their super fast puters. The client places an order and expects to match another individual. What happens is that GS buys/sells ahead of their client and then passes on the deal and pockets a penny. Pennys add up. Even on...

Simply being a gold bug is no guarantee of success. I've been a bug for years and while it is probable that I have done better than most, (I'm ahead of the game!) it has not been easy. Frankly, I have no idea who to believe.

I am well read on the alternative view of the US. Have been so for many years. What I have learned is that the members of YOUR chat site are prolly no better informed than the members of this or any other. That is: we are all observers. The REAL money, and privately held wealth in the US is...

I keep hearing this. It's a bit hard to believe but maybe I'm wrong. :D

My biggest stock holding by far is in C$s and I have picked up 5% on the exchange rates in the last week. They don't mine in Oz so I have avoided the Aussie correction too. Diversification can work! :)

That will be German demand. The Austrian mint is out of stock and major on-line retailers have closed down their websites temporarily and not taking back orders.

Gold won't "drag up" silver for long. They are separate commodities and tend to move independently already. One day silver will have it's own day in the sun and will be valued in it's own right.

That's OK we all see things differently Good point but the DOW can only be valued in USD as I see it. The German exchange skyrocketed during the Weinmar inflation but I think it was still better to be invested in other exchanges. This is the most consistent thing about upheavals: the moneyed...

There are two sides to an equation. It is considered possible that the "gold" side can rocket. But even taking the DOW stocks on their own, there is currently a move to replace one of the poor performers with Google. Remember the DOW is only 30 stocks. By selecting "survivors" you, by...

You may have missed the leverage factor involved with buying the miners. If you know of a miner with high cash costs so that they marginally profitable, a $100 rise in POG will DOUBLE their cash flow and (theoretically) will double in price. Warning: I have never liked Lihir as an investment...

As a gold bug I look at it this way: Gold has a value of 1. That is also it's long term value and as it doesn't earn a dividend it should not be a good investment. We agree on this. Before 1971 when the US$ was quoted as being worth one thirtysecond of a troy oz of gold every other asset or...

Two problems Steve: Firstly gold has been on a tear for eight years so the GFC is not the only, or even main, cause of the rise. It started @ US$275/oz. Secondly only an optimist can think we are out of the woods yet. (You're entitled to be an optimist if you wish, nothing to do with me.)...

It's that chart that was burnt into my brain last year. That's the trouble with having studied this stuff. :D For what it worth: I have never before heard (American) stock market commentators (not silly Cramer!) saying they are out of the stock market and in cash as they have been saying the...

This has become a circular argument hasn't it? I don't trust charts that much. I was pretty sure that it was just a bear trap a year ago so never bought much but that's OK I don't have to lighten up now. :D Missed a bit of profit of course but such is life.
