Should I move to the US?

Indifference's post #109 seemed about right to me, which is what I was alluding to in my post "Why Las Vegas?" As I recall Perp likes Taxas, Dallas for example, and so would I. As an Aussie I think I could handle Texans easier than New Yorkers and the climate would be better for a Qld boy...

Should I move to the US?

San Francisco would be wonderful but I doubt there are many bargains there. San Diego has a good Aussie type climate and is close to Mex and LA. Mightn't be much cheap there either. Me? I'd still like New Orleans, to be close to the South and the music scene. And NASCAR racing. :D

Should I move to the US?

OK So what about Ireland? I am half Irish and I reckon I would love their sense of humour. (Unlike others who shall remain anonymous :))

Should I move to the US?

Them gun-totin Repups are what worries me. I doubt they have a sense of humour. Even you Aussies often miss-read me but at least you can't actually SHOOT me. LOL

Should I move to the US?

That would be the way to go. That way you can borrow in US$ countering the exchange risk and take advantage of their low mortgage rates abt 4% for 30 yrs fixed I saw over the weekend. PM me if you have someone in mind. :) This latest mess where foreclosures have been put on hold because of...

Should I move to the US?

Texas is a solid state which never had a boom and never had a bust, but the rental market would be ok there. Same with Hawaii. Florida has suffered badly but could you get a reliable tenant? If they can afford rent, they can buy. Besides, is there and industry there? I have discarded any idea...

Should I move to the US?

No probs for me, I'm retired.:D But Mrs Fish wouldn't go so I'm talking through my hat really. I don't want to live under a communist regime here. I don't like the American system either but I could remain detached from it, I think.

Should I move to the US?

Seriously, you cannot expect "consensus" on a single themed site such as this to be meaningful. But, to be fair, "consensus" is meaningless anyway, no matter how wide you get your input. I'm trying to remember John K Galbraith's dismissal of "common wisdom". Someone may be able to let us know...

Should I move to the US?

The Illuminati is credited with that.

Should I move to the US?

You may be right but that is beyond by ken and beyond my planning. I must hope for the best.

Should I move to the US?

Why? The flaw in your logic is that you are assuming everything reverts to the mean, that nothing changes. If I were to point out that Aus property prices should revert to the mean of X3 times average wages you would object and say "It's different this time!" It's always different and this time...

Should I move to the US?

I would only consider buying US property if I could get a US$ denominated loan for 80%. I would not invest aussie $s there.

Should I move to the US?

I followed Daniel's link to Vegas property. There were 2,476 listings and the median was listed at $119,000. Built in '06 with 4 br, 3 bath it was absurdly cheap by our standards. Catching falling knives come to mind.

Should I move to the US?

Vegas is froth and bubble, a proxy for "Wealthy America". Without the exuberant wealthy it has no reason to exist, just as Detroit now has no reason to exist. In fact they don't even have the means to exist. No water, no industry, no power. Everything is imported at high cost. It is oft said...

Should I move to the US?

There are large parts of my little regional town that you should keep personal safety in mind, especially (but not only) at night. I would humbly suggest that if you threw a dart at a map of The Great Plains you could find a pretty peaceful town. I would also guess the locals would be...

Should I move to the US?

You would need to check the body corp charges. I've heard that the banks don't pay BC fees on condos that have been handed back. Remaining owners have to make up the slack.

Should I move to the US?

I seriously considered shifting to the US but knew I would need a convincing argument to present to Mrs Fish. Frankly, I couldn't find it. One problem I saw (and I'm serious here) is that I find Yanks and their politics to be a bloody big joke and I'd probably say so in the wrong company and...

Should I move to the US?

Now you tell us! :D But there is an appeal to "cheap" houses.

Should I move to the US?

Of course you can rent a house complete with cook/housekeeper and gardner in (insert your favourite SEAsian country here) even if your only income was an Oz age pension. "Owning" is a good idea sometimes.

Should I move to the US?

I have a big tax incentive to go there and I have spent hours looking at US prop sites. One big neg is that Mrs Fish doesn't want to go there but that is not of interest to you. Another is that I have no idea how to get health insurance and without it, you could blow half a mil on a heart...
