    Also note the lawyer may not be able to give informal legal advice because of the lack of insurance cover, practising restrictions etc.

    You are forgetting that solicitors must enter into a cost agreement with clients before commencing work on a matter.

    You can't just ignore a problem like this or you could get a default judgment against you. It is best to write to the lawyer, nicely, and state you thought this was a freebie. If the lawyer disputes this then ask about the costs agreement or the lack of one. Maybe refer her to s309 of the LPA...
