Yep that's what I do. Still buying but building cash in offset :)

My view; The stars aligned perfectly in the last 5 years...falling interest rates pushing yields up, and falling AUD (holding USD denominated bonds). Not being a bond investor, my comments aren't worth much, what I would say though is I would be leery of investing with a Pty Ltd that has only...

JM, why do you think 8-10% yielding bonds are low risk ?

So Laminar is an active bond manager, same DD and scepticism is required as for an active equities manager. 1% and 20% outperformance fee. No franking. The 5 year performance needs to be understood in the context of the market last 5 years. Bonds were really cheap. Personally in accumulation...

Yeah AFI actually really gap the market in the early 2000s this would be from dodging tech stocks. This is stuff long term conservative managers do well, the once a decade blindingly obvious. If the business isn't profitable they don't hold it.. Nothing speculative. Wheras the index etf will...

Do I sense a naysayer? :) Run the yahoo finance charts, their numbers go back to 2000, overlay XJO and you will see that AFI are short changing themselves by only quoting 10 years (which is the standard practice in the industry). I have seen the AFI chart over 30 years at an AFI presentation...

Dollar cost averaging combined with some dry powder and the confidence to buy in major corrections will provide outperformance. But that second bit is difficult to achieve when the talking heads are claiming the sky is falling. So step 1 set up a dollar cost averaging program and never ever mess...

Provided the account is set up correctly with a dedicated sub account for investment purposes so you can seperate deductable and non deductable. I'd be getting advice from one of the forum pros (accountants) to ensure all your Ducks are in a row.

I covered that, the keys are very low fees, and that they don't need to index hug for fear of losing FUM as the fund is close ended. Ie. You sell the stock, they don't sell their positions. You sell stock in an unlisted fund, they need to sell stock to pay you out, hence losing FUM. They buy...

Depends on the fund / segment of the market. If you are talking 2% per annum and performance fees, then yes large cap managers will struggle to beat the index and this is borne out through plenty of academic research. There are a few of reasons for this - market efficiency, fear of FUM loss...

Yeah, I have accounts with two full service brokers. If you flick me a PM with your email address i'll see what I can dig up. I will say though that LIC research is fairly simple stuff really.

2 things; - The beauty of franking........3.7% FF is 5.28% grossed up :D - AFI has a long history of raising dividends, and historically has yielded around 4% FF. I'd expect something like 25cps annualised at current SP. If you are using borrowed money, then AFI is a great vehicle as...

Hi Cliff, yes the range of ETFs on the ASX these days covers a lot of sector specific offerings ; Consumer Staples, Healthcare, Telecoms, Banks, Resources etc to name a few. All of them will list top 10 holdings in their pds/fact sheets. Though if you really want to dig down, then the NYSE...

Just wanted to pass comment on this too, there is some very bad info along these lines in Jan Somers books about index returns (and stock markets in general). An index fund periodically rebalances its holdings to replicate the index. This means as new companies join the index they are...

Yep, Rog has had a shocker pulling KO as a sole example :D Very ordinary! BUT, to your point on stock survivorship and indexes...the ghost fund... http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702304199804577477131145378546 The problem when people look at historical indexes and don't...

My broker has an spreadsheet that allows them to get a good handle on intra day NTA of the main LICs, they know top 20 holdings and get a live stock price feed on those and apply in ratio or something like that. Your crude method probably works just as well overall :)

Yeah Rog has a good business and he is a good promoter. I'd suggest however that Rog's historical performance ( going back to Clime days ) is pretty patchy. The comments on the article pretty well rebut a lot of his points, so I won't bother with those. There is a role for active management in...

Trading and investing are very different matters. Tech/A is very much in the former camp and "plays" with relatively small sums from what I have seen. You run into difficulties when you try to trade which is a zero sum game. Any idiot can buy AFI, tick DRP and keep buying in any market...

Ok something really messed up is going on with the monthly ASX LIC report ; http://www.asx.com.au/documents/products/ASX_Funds_Monthly_Update_-_February_15.pdf Showing AFI at +4.5% at end February for example. I typically look at this as a reference...I won't be any more :( PS. Glad to...
