all i was saying is that 40k is more than enough for what you 'need'. if you have to spend more than that it probably means that you're buying plasma TVs, iPads and other useless gadgets. hence the 'look at yourself'

40k is a adequate for an adequate standard of living. If you spend more than that but you can afford it, then that's fine....what are you talking about? and yes, lots of people (say people who work at Big4 accounting firms) don't even earn that!

I agree that 40k (after tax) is plenty. If you need more than that then you need to take a hard look at your finances. I think the 200k for a family only applies if you're sending your kids to private schools and live in a decent place/house. Otherwise you won't need that much money to live
