Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

And this is where Evan hit the nail on the head. Yes I was, going on what Units said, but I am delighted that Evan threw that in about the possibility of an unforseen neutral completing the circuit. A lot of electrical wiring is hidden in walls etc, and amongst the dangers can be a...

Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

In the interest of a better understanding, If we have a situation where the metal light fitting is earthed, the active at the globe socket is live via the switch, and the neutral is open circuited behind the switch, how does the light still work?

Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

But how does the metal light fitting become live if the hack installed it minus the earth?

Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

Yes I understand this, but I don't understand how this livens up the "external metal light fitting" when neither active or neutral should have been connected to this in the first place, keeping in mind that the hack left the earth off. I only need to ask for clarification, with 3 sparkies in...

Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

No, it was something my old man taught me, along with having a healthy respect for electricity. Something else he taught me was that electricity is colour blind, and man should not fiddle! I didn't want to explain in such a way that may lead someone into a trap, or breach the forum rules.:)

Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

Yes, I can but it will get deleted, once you get to 3 way you have to use an intermediate switch, which sort of switches diagonally within itself, once you've got to this point, you can keep adding intermediate switches, to run up several flights of stairs for example.

Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

HI Rixter, Yes to service an appliance as a tradesman, but I don't think so to build one, have you got a link to that for Vic?

Do I need a sparky to change a light switch?

With respect, not all circuits are protected by RCDs, I think the basic answer at this point is that it is illegal for a non registered person to do electrical work on a fixed installation whether we like it or not. But as far as I know this stops at the fixed wiring, and as such you can make...
