I disagree. No bank in this environment is going to lend long and borrow short. Not with potentially inflationary waves of liquidity washing into the system. Which means they won't lend it if they can't fund it. And to be able to lend it - they need someone to lend it to them cheaper...

In order for the 5 year rate to get low - people have to believe that IRs will be lower for longer. At the moment people think this is just going to be a 2009 dip. Maybe they will have changed their mind by mid 2009.
