It was not the only example. If you go a bit further back, you'll see I quoted stats stating that the average debt in the US is 20k. That is lower than a 4 year degree in Australia under the current system - never mind what the future amount will rise to. Why on Earth would you take on a debt...

Are you serious? The most common place of birth outside of Australia/NZ/UK is China - people born here make up a whopping 1% of our population and this is an achievement? My mother in law lives in Canada and on the first day of arriving in Australia to visit, she said she was surprised that...

It is a majority of ONE suburb of 20 odd thousand people. Noble Park isn't even 1% of Australia's (or even Melbourne's) population.

Have you been outside of Australia? There are cities in many countries with double that or more. 60% of a very small suburb being "migrants" including people born in the UK, NZ and similar is not "a lot".

    Getting a Uni degree

Many people I've spoken to in Australia consider even 2nd or 3rd generation Australians to be "immigrants" which is why I asked. Back on topic, if it's just people that were born overseas themselves, then obviously Australia would have a higher rate as we've been accepting migrants for a...

What is the definition of "immigrant" though? That could alter the numbers significantly.

How funny for this to be posted in a thread (or initial post) arguing that further studies are not worthwhile. The opinion of one real estate agent or random guy living in Noble Park holds more weight for you than a survey that includes 28,000 people or 100% of the people that live there? :eek...

The bulk of migration to Australia is from the UK and NZ. I'd hardly even call those groups migrants TBH. The population of Noble Park is 28,000. Of these, about a third have ancestry in Australia or the UK and these are the top two most represented ancestries in the suburb. The top five...

Your anecdotes of a few hundred or thousand migrants is not evidence. Europe (as per my previous example) has open borders and there is no way a big number of tradesmen would be making six figures. Not when there's people from eastern and southern Europe to contend with. The only reason tradies...

Sorry, I should've said financial aid rather than scholarship. The below is for a household income of 70k. Note that this figure also includes accommodation, meals, books, etc. Your estimated scholarship $54,950 Your cost $7,400 --- Cost to Parents $2,800 Student Summer Work $1,600...

Private universities generally have extremely generous scholarship and student loan arrangements though. If your family is average income, you can go to Harvard, for example, for a similar cost as a technical school.

Technical colleges can be very expensive in the US - often more than uni degrees. http://studyusa.com/en/schools/categories/1/2-year-community-colleges/ The average student loan debt for a 4 year degree in the US is about 25k. We're the ones who'll be paying 100k soon...

No, our immigration system favours very limited immigration. I'm not sure how many six figure earning tradies you'll find in Europe, for instance.

Exactly. The cost/benefit analysis that some people do is ridiculous. Wow, you could be earning money during those 3-4 years instead of studying! The number of people who would actually save/invest well from the ages of say 18 - 22 are so small. The number who would make a noteworthy income in...
