OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Only seven pages? Getting back to the original topic... So Esel, given you always intended sending your kids to a state school so you could give them a start on the property ladder as you said in your first post, how are you planning to do this? A bloke I know said exactly the same thing...

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Sort of in-line with this, my daughter made a passing comment earlier this year to one of her friends from primary school that at her high school it was 'cool' to do well. I thought that was interesting. Just another one of those incidental anecdotal things, though.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Yeah, it doesn't mean much these days. Probably helps kids some pretty good work experience opportunities in Year 10 or whenever they do that, but that's about it.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Esel, it sounds like you have already made your decision. You might have just been looking for a bit of confirmation. You're lucky you have a good local school (according to the Myschool website, at least).

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Page four. Only another six to go. Might need someone to say something outrageous.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

At least it's easier for a private school to move on a problem teacher.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Clearly it is awful. But it is a reflection of that teacher and not the school (or the system).

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Yep, all schools have their fair share of this. (Well, I guess the Catholic schools have probably had more than their fair share.) If I had a great, local state school, my kid would be there.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

I don't have any idea what the academic results are at the school (IGS at Broadway) my daughter goes to. How silly is that. I liked it the first time I walked into it. The kids said hello and the uniform policy was obviously pretty relaxed. (That's a bit like buying an IP because the people who...

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Yep. I know teachers in ordinary public schools who wouldn't get a job in a private school. They're just not good enough. But even the good ones spend a lot of their time on crowd control and dealing with kids whose parents have surrendered all responsibility for behaviour to the school. The...

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

But it is limited, Esel. It's just about the effect of homework on academic success.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Two pages already. I'm predicting ten pages of responses.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

This is the key: I would say it needs to be more that 'decent', though. Esel, if you are in the area for a great public school, you're set. I'm not.

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

Ah Esel, you might been hoping everybody on a property forum would say, 'Yes, I agree, forget school, help them get a house.' This is a very narrow study. The link is broken, but was it the one that said kids in private schools do more homework than kids in public schools for no apparent...

OECD report says australian private schools offer no accademic advantage

It's been a while since the private vs public school debate has come up. I'm predicting pages and pages and pages of responses with all sort of anecdotes and theories to back up people's personal choices. I might as well kick things off. If the state schools in my area were any good, my kids...
