Well, the first month will be a few grand. It's training today for a couple of weeks.

The clearance took a while. I start work tomorrow (March 3rd). So my first pay for over twelve months. My first job for nine years where I can go home and not have the strong possibility of people calling me. And the next public holiday will be my first paid one for as long as I can remember...

With one more week of the course to go, I've been offered a job- pending security clearance, which shouldn't be a problem. It's entry level IT, but with the chance to progress, with lots of opportunity for training in all sorts of paths. In one way it's almost a pity, as I had been planning a...

Mobile Apps (iOS and Android I believe) are on the course- the last units to complete. But I'm a techo. I can't see myself with the originality to produce something new- either in Apps or Youtube. This is almost my only genre in Youtube so far- a group I now sing with, but I hadn't joined...

Good luck Dave. Unfortunately I have an eight year gap between my previous IT experience and now.

Thanks, I'm not interested in that. A daughter's boyfriend was working in security. He loved long periods of doing nothing. I couldn't stand it. And I hate guns. I'm doing the computing course because I really enjoy that work, and I'd rather take the time to get back into that career...

From some research. Many of the jobs advertised on Seek are for contractors- so they require immediate start. An agency would not be happy about hiring somebody on a six month contract and having them out of action for the first 3 months of that. However apparently some agencies advertise for...

There is a police clearance which can be obtained easily for a small cost. The security level required by some government agencies though is a much higher level check and is only available through the course of employment. I suspect it's expensive which is why many agencies require it before...

Yes, that's standard procedure to get a security clearance. So many jobs in Canberra require you to have a security clearance, but you can't get a clearance without having a job which requires a clearance. (A few advertise "eligible for clearance" but they would probably have a high turnover...

    1. Only 14 IT jobs in the whole NSW public service? Ouch. 2. Click Job Search on the bar, then the great big "Cadet" button- "Page not found".

I did go down one dead end. There was a company called iChip Solutions which gave training in testing, and promised a chance at certification, help with resumes and help in getting a job. The training was provided- however it was a little ad hoc, with very little in the way of training...

It's difficult for a person beginning (again) to find much through Seek- by the time it gets onto Seek they've probably already been through their pile of unsolicited resumes from people with training but no experience. I don't think LinkedIn is much better- but at least I have revamped and...

Thanks for all the advice provided in here. I had started a Diploma of Software Development with the local TAFE. I really enjoyed that- and felt that I'd really prefer to get back into an area which I enjoy, even though it's not for many years. The diploma though was a bit light on, and would...

IT Helpdesk would be fine. Especially with the limited number of years I'm looking to be employed. It's another area which is being outsourced, though as with testing, there will always be secure applications needing Australian citizens. My wife's soon to be outsourced job is Helpdesk for a...

As are an increasing number of roles. There are still agencies who require security clearance for any workers. They used to outsource envelope stuffers to the Philippines. They were Manila folders.

Thanks for the ideas from everybody so far. BV, a big impediment for me working in a pro shop is that I really don't like golf. I'm sorry. When I have tried it, I got a score on one hole which most would be ashamed to get in a round of 18 holes. It just didn't gel for me.

Rixter I'm not sure how that would go in a market which is, if anything, declining slightly around here. It wouldn't give any satisfaction to the bank manager for servicibility, which is something I really need. Thanks for the thoughts though.
