The number 1 cause of Car Crashes in Australia for 2011-2012 according to Allianz is nose to tail (tailgating). From that article- So obviously bad driving habits and tiredness are factors about which it's hard to legislate or enforce. Alcohol and not wearing seat belts can be enforced- it's...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

The road toll peaked in 1970. Upper speed limits, outside of built up areas, were only imposed in Australia in the 1970s- depending on state. There was a prima facie limit before that- my experience than was that people didn't worry about it much. Speed is one cause of accidents. Yes, there...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Not quite right according to evidence already cited 1. When the 130 speed limit was introduced the number of deaths dropped. 2. The number of accidents increased although the number of deaths dropped. When there is an accident at a higher speed the consequences are likely to be worse...

You are right. It's 24% higher in Germany than Australia. And double the rate of the UK. Actually the speed limit has gone up. It used to be 100kph. But when the highways became dual lane carriageways it was increased to 110.

40% higher? That's acceptable? The articles are not saying that speed is a major cause of accidents, although it can be one factor. What that are saying is that at a higher speed, the chance of death resulting is much higher. There are many factors in accidents. The fatality rate has been...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

NSW has recently done an audit, and removed speed cameras where they feel it's more about revenue than safety. But I've found a way to avoid getting speeding fines. By not speeding. I'd like to see more red light cameras. There are many times when I've had to wait on a green light for people...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

While I do not object on principal to police checking speeds in a school zone, I have seen it done outside a school which was on semester break (a private school where semester breaks are slightly longer than government schools). This was obviously a revenue raising exercise rather than a safety...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

So I'm sitting on the limit (110), I go into the right lane to overtake somebody doing 100- then somebody doing 150 comes up behind me and sits on my tail. Or the hatted Volvo driver is overtaking somebody doing 70 ...

Open Road Speed Limits? Time for a change?

Agreed. 30 years ago, it would take 4+ hours to drive between Sydney and Canberra- the highway had long stretches of single lane road, and once you hit Liverpool it was city driving all the way in. 3 hours is a luxury now.
