    Why be an employer ?

I don't know the specifics, as I was speaking in general terms. Concerning you...because you sold your business at a profit, and your spouse has income, Centrelink must assume you don't require help finding another job. There are lots of sites advertising jobs, that don't require...

    Why be an employer ?

Centrelink benefits are too easy to get, too easy to keep, and too generous. When this changes, job vacancies will be filled.

    Why be an employer ?

True...but since he left that job, has he been receiving benefits? Maybe he wanted a longer 'vacation', and didn't really want another job so fast.

    Why be an employer ?

Too bad they can't be dobbed into Centerlink...have their benefits suspended.

BV & Pinkboy, Just curious. Were these applicants on Centerlink benefits. According to the TV, they are required to apply for 20 jobs a month...maybe they were scared they may actually get one.

I'm sure a $20 investment to buy a pack would be well worth it, if you are trying to not hire a smoker. Smokers, as a group, are less healthy, and cost employers more money. Taking more smoke breaks and sick days. Don't get your undies in a bunch, Pinkboy :D

    Why be an employer ?

Have a package of cigarettes nearby, and offer them one, and stick one in your mouth. If they don't smoke, just take the cig back out..and say you're trying to quit. Smokers rarely decline :)

    Why be an employer ?

Actually it was a carpet factory. I would have rather worked piece, than hourly wage. Mr. Fab As you said, many on SS are salaried. I've never worked for a salary. How does an employee know when they have done what is required that day? Is it black and white?

    Why be an employer ?

Mr. Fab, I really do understand what you saying. As an employee, I do understand this mindset. As a manager, I also understand. (they are still only an employee) As the owner of the business...I wouldn't agree My answer would be if employee A was done in 4 hours, and employee B took 8...

    Why be an employer ?

Property Girl, Most of people here are pencil pushers. They have never worked a physical job in their life...working in a factory as a labourer would be beneath them. Now if you asked them, if they hired a plumber by the hour, and they watched him constantly playing on his phone instead...

    Why be an employer ?

If I remember correctly, from previous threads/posts, SS's who are employees have justified their posting from work, by claiming they always work extra hard, when they are working :) ...paraphrasing , of course. But I'm with you PG, I would consider it a form of stealing.

    Why be an employer ?

The employer should have all the control, when it is their finances on the line. The employee is free to get a job elsewhere, or start up their own business.

    Why be an employer ?

You're absolutely right. However, the individual needs to work hard the first 5-20 years of their working life, and then they can retire...and get paid for not 'working'. The problem? People are not willing to put in the work, to accomplish this.

Bayview, Don't be too hard on yourself. Even if you think you are only treading water at times, your head still seems to be consistantly above the water. Many people go thru hard times and they look back on it with satisfaction,of their determination.

    Why be an employer ?

Bayview, Maybe you can show him how if he quit/ slowed down his smoking, he could buy a house in a short period of time? Sometimes just putting it in numbers he may get the idea. It may take a while, but the conversation may sink in..in a couple of months/years. Do it in a story, "I know...

Peter 14.7, I tried to give you kudos, but I need to spread more around first :) That is a great post. What you are saying about Australia, is very similar to what I say about Canada. I just hope our governments don't wait too long.
