    Solving the housing affordability crisis

Luckily for me, the fringes of Canberra are still reasonably close in. Because both my PPOR and my IP are located at what is currently the very outter fringes. I literally have a paddock and a horse riding school across the road from me. :)

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

I always buy the mexican food when I go to the old bus depot markets - small place Canberra is. :) I don't own a slow cooker. Get told I should buy one all the time. I cook it on the stovetop and then once it's up to heat turn the temp right down with lid on, or chuck it in the oven with lid...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

75K is extremely cheap, but by the time you add everything - slab, council fees, labour costs, carpets, fixtures, tiles, paint, mailbox, clothesline, appliances (including oven, exhaust fans) etc, etc, etc, I would bet the cost comes in much closer to the 200k mark. The fact is that building...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

We only buy egg pasta normally, not the really cheap durum wheat crap. Generally costing about $4 for 350g. :) 1kg Pasta flour (although I could use ordinary plain flour if I wanted to lower my standards in which case I would get 2kgs for the same price. ;) ) costs about $2.50. 12 Eggs costs...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

Yeah. Most people would be like that. But we put bills before food, because it isn't uncommon for us to go a month or two without doing a grocery shop when we are really tight - just milk and bread as regular items; and if we cann't afford anything else, we always have tinned tomatoes, flour...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

Like I said, I have plan A, B and C. The mortgage is the first priority payment in our household. The bills second. Food third. Then nappies, etc, etc. If absolute need be we can tighten up in most areas - I can make my pasta from scratch all the time rather then sometimes buying dry or fresh...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

This is how close to the edge I'm living at the moment. Only with bigger figures in terms of incomes mortgages and expenses. Currently we are sitting at about 60% of our income dedicated to motgages. It is going to because even tighter shortly, when I go on maternity leave from my casual job...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

Canberra has a similar housing affordability scheme for FHB's - It was how we were able to purchase our PPOR. In our case it was for brand new houses in new estates.

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

Where did I say my parents were irresponsible??? My parents are people to be admired. They are people who managed to get ahead in the end despite everything life threw at them (And it sure as hell threw alot of crap). Where did I say "woe is me". My childhood and my parents have made me the...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

 My upbringing is hardly fiction. Nor is it all that uncommon. I could care less if you believe me or not. It is what it is. How does my having kids (all very much planned BTW) guilt anyone about anything??? As far as I am aware, I am but one of a very large group of people who...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

I would LOVE a 4 bedroom house with a pool and 2 bathrooms. Hell, loose the pool and add an extra bedroom and I'll even happier. At the moment I'm living in a 3yr old mouse and rat infested 'small' 3 bedroom house, with one bath, one living area and tiny backyard. Lots of fun with lots of...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

Cupcakes - The problem is YOU are working on the premise that there is an "affordability crisis". Whereas many of us (myself definitely included) just do not agree that this is the case. [AS I thought I had made quite clear in my previous post, which wasn't an 'attack' on you, but rather my...

    Solving the housing affordability crisis

I am a Young (both gen Y) family (3 kids plus one on the way) on a single income (albeit a reasonably good single income). It can be hard. It takes perserverance, dedication, savings, budgeting and clearly defined set of goals to work towards, as well as maybe adjusting your own expectations...
