I guess overall I'm still sceptical that there is reliable profits to be made with this sort of strategy these days. All the people I've heard of doing it didn't seem to make much, if you took away the effect of the rising market at the time.

I wouldn't be worrying about the tax side of things yet. First thing is whether or not they have the skills to make a profit from this sort of thing - not easy I expect.
