    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

since the other thread has been closed i will post it here for the record (and because i promised boatboy i would)--after a few (relatively civil) back and forths via pm, he is right and i was utterly and miserably wrong on vanuatu. my apologies to him and everyone else for wasting bandwidth...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

i learned the "link please" thing from boatboy. he has been very educational. but somehow your inability to find a link is my fault? i must be pretending to be someone else? on both forums at the same time? why would i do that? i understand why some people who want to hide their views...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

i'm in o'connor. and my last rent hike was about 7%--just a little under the max figure allowed. i am seeing more rentals come up for significantly less than what we pay now in neighboring suburbs (dickson, lyneham, some in downer but that is a bit further away from Civic and i cycle to work)...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

yep, that pretty much covers it. though i have said here and there and elsewhere that there are many good, intelligent people on SS (and the other board) who I respect a great deal. there are a couple of others who i think have no real concern for reality and only care about proving the other...

So every journalist should be ignored, every analyst should be ignored, every reporter should be ignored unless you have ok'd his/her financial portfolio? So we have gone from discussing the content of the article to dismissing the person who wrote it without knowing anything at all about...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

hi lizzie, would yorke's assertion that one can only rent to $1000/wk "quality tenants" or $300/week crackhead dole bludgers qualify as"sweeping statements that don't ring true in many areas"? i understand that my assertion that, when people are unable to sell properties at prices they can...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

Oh I think I qualified my statements, people just choose to interpret them as sweeping. I did not say anywhere that rents were going to collapse throughout the country. And I did provide links regarding vanuatu. Still it is my fault for trying to present a contrarian viewpoint on a forum that...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

Well, i am already paying market rent. If he wants to raise rates more than 1.2X increased CPI then he can, of course, throw me out. And then he can advertise for significantly more than what the current market is and have an empty place for a month or so, pay for advertising, etc., etc. and...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

somewhere cheaper? I am not in any way trying to say that all places are affected equally. but if you do raise rent above what the market will bear people will leave--stands to reason. that's all i'm saying. if you are in a popular district with people clamouring to get in obviously the...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

well, if nothing else it means my landlord won't be able to raise rents. in the ACT landlords are not allowed to raise rent by more than 1.2X the change in housing CPI (I think that is the figure, act tenants union has a detailed explanation somewhere). So if rents only go up 1% as a whole, my...

    Rents tumble in inner Sydney

I don't think that there is any contradiction here. People want sell at prices buyers aren't willing to pay. hence the low volume. after a while they give up and rent the houses out, resulting in a looser rental market. its just a balancing out, i guess. but one that benefits the renter...
