1981 HIA Building Awards

An old video of a 1981 prizewinning new home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62VYCCWMvpw

Interesting that someone could get a prize for an almost windowless brick box, even as 'top home'.

'Top budget home' I could understand, but 'top home' I can't.

Shows how fashions change.

From the perspective of time even other 1970s and '80s houses have better street appeal.

I wonder if homes that win prizes date more quickly than those that haven't?

This one, though, I could understand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ovDjoHS0J4

That's a lovely home (for someone my age who got married in 1981)

Id go for French doors onto the verandah over pokey little windows any day. it might be old fashioned, but a classic look is always classic.

I imagined a windowless brick box would have no eaves, no verandahs, no portico and be built more recently, like something from Grand Designs. They often don't have any "windows"

I agree! Unfortunately the links were duplicated and the first link was wrong. Now corrected.

I'd also prefer the second one to modern places, but at the budget end of the market would prefer any modern house to the so called 'top home' in the first link.

Are yes, I see what you meant. Don't you love the flat roof, ideal for keeping in all the oppressive summer heat. Back to the really nice ones on Better Homes and Gardens tonight.
