2010/11 Federal Budget

Hmmm... so not a whole lot in that when you take out the "budget surplus 3 years early" and "working families" etc.

So basically they showed the worse case scenario last year, then when it didnt get that bad they say "look how much better we did!"

Not really impressed by the budget. Everything is in a year or two (or five) with no real impacts over the short term and a return to budget from a growing economy and great terms of trade.

Some quick thoughts....

50% reduction for first $1,000 of savings interest? Best outcome is an extra $232.50.

Take resource tax, give to infrastructure fund is a good place to put it (although i dont approve of the tax).

Take GST and Smoker's tax and invest in health promises (which they havent delivered on yet... "Super GP's" ... hmmm)

I feel like the taxes keep coming on straight away, the tax breaks are phased in over 5 years, and the promises keep getting stacked up and not delivered on.

Anyone else see the speech? Any thoughts?

I'm in agreeance with you, a whole lot of "in two/three years time we will ....". Very disappointing, but just what I expected from this Government.

They would have been criticised if they offered a 'traditional' election budget of handouts and tax cuts, so I can see what they are trying to do.

It seems to have taken the wind out of Joe Hockey's sails. He is all over the shop this morning.

yeah the government is smart with that. they have leaked all the tricky stuff (super tax, tabacco tax) over the last couple of weeks, so nothing really left for them to announce last night.

Which gives the opposition nothing to sink their teeth into.

assuming they're still in government - and if they're not, they can't break any promises!

or is this a "vote for me so that in 2-3 years time we can ... "

All governments break promises and all oppositions make out these promises are important. I have yet to see an election where this hasnt happened and never will.

the 10/11 Budget assumes that the 40% mining super profits tax will be passe din the senate.

it was a political move to make the Libs look like they don't care about "small business and working families" by blocking the super tax.

Fact is, the Libs could drop small business tax to 25%, stop handing cash out to stupid causes and still provide the $500 auto rebate and STILL balance the books.

no one wil care is we get back to BE in 3 or 4 years.

What about this BC..??....

I can't see why the greens wouldn't pass the mining tax. it's right up with their socialist and environmental beliefs.

But what if the greens did a deal with labor and get the harsher amendments done to the ETS if they then pass the mining tax? An even sillier ETS would then pass through the senate, and as part of the deal the greens would pass the mining tax. We'd end up with both!

Imagine what that would do to our economy?

See ya's.

They need ALL independent senators, not just the Greens. That includes Senator Xenophon, who once was a member of the young Liberals, and Sen. Fielding. So making more appealing to Bob Biege would make it less appealing to the other two.

Yeh - our economy might get even worse and drop to number 2 in the western world!

Lucky we have you guys to keep everything in check!

i'd say it'd be the 4th horse of the apocalypse, myself.

perhaps because thats how theyre actually getting back to surplus quicker...couple years before the costs start to come (not all deferred, just some) is money that helps get us back. either way, im not too fussed. the tax return change is good (wont help me, but will help many people i know).

I haven't paid attention to a budget release in about 20 years.

It's always much the same, and is mostly promises with the fingers crossed.

Was it on tv? damn; I missed it.

yawn.

I was amazed to hear of how they just seem to think we're just off again now, no problemo , chuck a few billion around, problem solved .

X % next yr , + another the following , it's all worked out , we're as safe as houses now and sailing off into the sunset all happy and fixed like.
But then I guess they have to put out that vibe don't they .
But anyway , I for one am wrapped at the hospital, school and training spending .
After 11 yrs of neglect and theft from Howard , it's all well over due .
Those yrs always amazed me at how Aussies put their almighty dollar above their health, children, schools and skilled workers , how shallow and blindfolded was that ?
Of course they won't do it all but atleast the intent is there.

Just opened a can of worms I know it, owell .

Cheers

Random, clearly you are a Labor voter with little clue about the difference in state and federal responsibility. Tell me again why you vote Labor, and complain about Health and Education. Health and Education are state issues, controlled by state governments. That's why there are different systems in each state. Even Rudd is trying to bring in health under the commonwealth, as even they know how poorly the state have run it. But, no doubt, you keep voting state Labor, expecting something different after 14yrs of Labor.
It's amazing, all the Labor voters go on about "think of the children", and then keep voting the same Labor incompetence and mismanagement in states, expecting things to improve. QLD, VIC, NSW all have difference schooling systems because public education is state run. Don't complain if you keep voting the same idiots in every time.

And there she blows .
But clearly nothin , I go for whomever looks like atleast trying to give the country what I feel it most needs on the day .
Yes I know it's suppose to be, so where is he throwing the what , 7 bill' was it , it's nowhere near as clear cut as that mate and also hugely depends on the Gov of the days attitude , massively .
The changes in my areas alone were amazing as soon as we changed Fed Gov', and well before any stimulus talk too. I have young kids myself and I can tell you one thing , from a mth or two after we changed Gov' my wife was coming home at least once or twice a week saying my God have a look at this or that and that's still going on now , the changes have been incredible really after Howard .
And talking state , actually 1/2 of our hospitals and schools were sold off or abandoned when Kennet was in , the place had never seen such poor services in all sorts of ways as far as I was concerned .
Anyway , of course this is the wrong place to be going on with labor anything and there is zero point but anyway , they all scare the crap out of me truth be know .

Cheers.

PS , and why one of the sunniest countries in the world would need nuclear , can't spell that , stations, on every corner is alone one of the most ludicrous things you'd ever come across don't you think , or you just couldn't give a damn !

Each to his own Random. Happy to here Rudd has your vote (another happy bought off Labor voter). All he is really doing is cleaning up the mess and incompetence of all the state labor governments.

But then when things go pear shapes in the next 2yrs, what's the bet the Labor voters will be complaining the loudest.

No doubt your all for the budget mining tax. Higher energy and goods prices then. It's karma really. The silliest voters are going to be hit the hardest financially.
