SFE predicts cash rate +2% in 12 months' time + a margin for the banks...

So even if they're only 50% right, discounted variable rates could be around 6.5% in 12 months' time...
 
The US Federal Reserve just raised their rate from 0.50% to 0.75%, the first time since June 2006 according to world news.

How big a deal is this in the scheme of things?

Aussie $$ will probably drop. Expense costs increase for imports and decrease for exports. Overseas holidays will cost more :( BUt if you dont have to worry where your next $ is coming from it wont really matter at all :)
