Asbestos in lino backing

Hi all.

I've pulled up some old lino floors in a house I just purchased & the backing is a reddish compressed paper / cardboard like substance.

Is this asbestos? And if so, how dangerous is it in this form? It doesnlt crumble when crushed o gove off any visible airborne particles.

Please help as I'm worried that I'm endagngering my famly by exposing this!

If it is red, it is unlikely to be asbestos. (I'm not saying "don't be careful.")

It is probably masonite that is decomposing.

No def not Masonite. It's more a papery, felt like substance.

If you're worried you can get a sample tested, just Google for a lab close to you that does asbestos testing and call them up about getting some tested.
