Bridging the gap between young & old with Rap

My Dad (89yo) lives alone (stubbornly refusing to move in with any of us), but has some neighbours with 2 young teenage kids. They show him their assignments, stuff they've made, get him to sponsor them and buy their fund raising chockies etc. Dad fixes their things and makes stuff for them and no doubt reminisces while doing it about Mum who we lost 2 years ago. The girl (13/14yo) is especially taken with Dad and treats him like a grandad. We didn't realise how much she loved/admired(?) him until this weekend when she bought around a rap song she'd written to perform in a show for the local public and asked Dad for his permission to do it. My sister was visiting at the time and emailed it around the family. Needless to say, we were all sniffing and blurry eyed at the end. Dad was also quite touched and a bit embarrassed. No idea if it goes with a particular tune(?) or is her own freestyle thing. (I don't know rap terminology!) Hope you enjoy it.

He was only the age of 4
and he lived through the war
he witnessed it all
And his mother suffered because they were poor.

He tells me his stories like all the time
from when he was younger & now he's 89
So I decided to write him this rhyme
this ones dedicated to my neighbour Bryan
He's been through a lot, like when he lost his wife
But he's stronger than ever, he's just living his life.
Living it to the fullest, & when I see it I'm inspired.

He's got so many stories with so much interest
when he shares them with you, you feel like you're a witness
His images are so vivid, like you couldn't imagine
He tells me these things like 'Back in the day'
And 'How Phoebe you should see how they've changed'.

He'd tell me these stories how he used to go in the street & play games
He'd meet up in the middle with all his mates
They didn't have material things, so they'd use their imagination & brain
& that's how they used to stay entertained

He'd tell me the story about how he first met his wife
He hadn't even seen her but he'd just heard her laugh
He turned to his mates & said 'I'm gonna marry that girl'
They didn't believe him, but low & behold,
He did because that's the kind of guy he is
And I just wouldn't have him any other way
Its amazing the person he's become today
So Bryan I just wanted to say thanks
For sharing with me all your knowledge & strength

That is truly lovely.

It's nice to see relationships like this between the generations, especially with those that don't share a connection through family.

Thanks for sharing.

Just gorgeous!! Love it.

It is really nice that the neighbors can be so neighborly, even if there are a series of decades in between them.

It sure did bring a smile to my face :)
