Live your life like no one is watching, mate. Because no one is.
This made me think of one reason I hate walking into "some" places on my own.
I went to a physio the other day in rooms that are part of a busy suburban doctor surgery. Doors slid open, I walked in, everybody looks up to see who is entering. I had a long wait as she was running late.
I sat on the side and watched. As the doors slid open, at least half of those waiting looked to see who was entering. Some didn't look as they were reading. Everybody else did.
I know this is different to a pub because people there are drinking and socialising and probably not caring about who is entering. I've also never felt this "watched" entering a coffee shop or restaurant because people there are "doing" something rather than just "killing time".
But I hate entering places like this doctor surgery when I know that most people (including me) look up when the doors open to see who is entering. Perhaps it is because we are bored and sick of waiting, with nothing better to do than check out the newcomer and wonder "what is she here for?"
I know I do a very quick mental checklist of "how do I look?, did I remember to change out of my pyjamas?, is my hair looking OK?" .
